Please post for me - How do we find out what roads are passable?

Some of us locally are talking about driving supplies down there. If the reporters can get in, and some people are getting out, we would like to get close enough WITH A BUS to do several things:

Take water and food down - "they" say 'just send cash', but all the leaders with heart (political, local, religious, whatever) are saying just GET US BUSES, FOOD, FUEL.

Bring some people back with us, probably to live for months.

Create at least ONE highly visible stand-in, Camp Casey style.

Document what's really happening.

I don't have enough posts to ask this question, but I'm not trusting the official sites and am not finding answers here or on craigslist to this question:

How close can a bus REALLY get?

1. Right now, no one gets in or out...
There is one road out, it's been turned into a military checkpoint and no one can leave, it seems. Maybe they allow reporters in and out, but people have come down there with supplies and were turned away for days.

I don't know if they would allow a "renegade bus", heh, to take people, it's getting very weird down there...

3. that is incomprehensible!
what is the justification? CDC in charge? My husband and I could go south to help. I just don't get it.

5. If people want to go, I encourage them to try...
I think my post sounded discouraging, but these are the reports out of NOLA as of tonight.

Hopefully, hopefully, they will get the rest out soon (they almost emptied the Superdome tonight, according to the police scan). I heard something about a planned airlift, now that the military is there, which is the best idea I've heard in a while.

4. Call the Louisiana State Police...

... Troop B. (800) 964-8076

Troop B is headquartered in Kenner, but they seem to be handling traffic along I-10 near the city of New Orleans.

My guess, though, is that they're trying to lock down the city, so if you just show up, they won't let you pass.

The press is in a different position--if their access is restricted, it makes the local authorities look as if they have something to hide, so that's why they're being given access. Freedom of the press and all that.

But, I doubt you'd be able to get closer than eastbound I-10 west of the city, or maybe an intersection with I-10 if coming from the north.
