Florida probably has enough snowbird homes to house all of
the refugees. There are two on my little street alone, fully furnished and ready to go. There are thousands of condos sitting vacant on the beaches. A leader would figure out a way to use them. Most of the owners have perfectly adequate year-round homes in the North, although some may be at lake cottages or trailers.

1. My parents have offered their winter home in FL
if you look on hurricanehousing.com, there are a lot of Florida listings.

2. With hurricane season not yet over
Can you imagine the trauma of moving those people into the condos on the beach just to have another hurricane come through?

Not saying it's a bad idea, I was just shuddering to think of how horrible it would be for them if it happened.

6. My first thought also, kdmorris; there are still
several storms out there. I'm in Houston and worry one could head this way; that would be a disaster considering how many evacuees are here, and the social services are already stretched to the breaking point.

11. They're doing that here in Panama City.
One of the condo groups contacted absentee owners to get their permission to use their units to house people--almost all of them agreed. A Christian retreat center out at the beach is letting people stay in all 250 of their rooms free of charge. My college has raised over $20,000 this week from faculty and staff. Red Cross here is having to ask people not to bring in clothing and food and such so that they won't be swamped. The response has been very generous all over the country.
