DUers, we need to stick together. |
|
Obviously emotions are running very high right now. We are all sickened and depressed over what has gone down in the Southeast. If there is one single thing every one of us can agree on it is that Bush is an asshole, and the way he handled this disaster is nothing less than criminal.
We are a very large community; one of the largest on the web, so it is obvious that we will have very different opinions about different issues. But we have one thing in common: dislike (or even hate) for Bush and the way he has run this country.
I am saddened even further by the way some have been treating others on DU for the last few days. I will not post any links because I am not here to call anyone out, but I have been attacked more in the last week then ever before, and I've seen others being attacked as well. Allowing our emotions to bubble over that way will accomplish nothing. It hurts us all. So I ask everyone to please take the anger that you have every right and reason to feel, and direct it where it needs to go - to the media, to the WH, to FEMA and everyone else responsible for this tragedy. It does not belong on the backs of other DUers.
Thank you for listening.

4. I was going to make this a silent nomination, but realized I can't be |
|
silent. DUers, you KNOW mutley is correct. Kick this thread; nominate it; remember this message, share with your fellow DUers.
IMHO, this is not the time for a feeding frenzy.

15. Bush is here until January 2009. |
|
We cannot change that. Even a sweep of Congress in 2006 will leave us with a group of politicians who will not seek to impeach. The greater enemy is the basic beliefs shared by the Republicans. Republican are working to reduce taxes whenever they can. The idea of slashing government until, "You can drown it in a bathtub" is a common belief among many Republicans. We need tax money to be paid to stop the deficit, to reduce the national debt, to build good infrastructure that lasts for generations to come, to start down the path to getting health care for all Americans, and to better educate every American.
This disaster in New Orleans is a clear example of inadequate spending by the government. There has been a program on PBS for many years that showed the dangers that New orleans faced. The disaster was destined to happen due to bad decisions. The only way to put off the destruction of New Orleans was with a major investment in the needed infrastructure. That would require tax money.

19. Not so sure about * going full term this time. |
|
I agree that we should have another president by Jan 09... but I think this man's regime and its hold on the American psyche is finished.
I think the majority of Conservative Leaders are now openly convinced that he is not competent and I would be extremely surprised if he is not impeached. I think the American People will demand no less than he and others be held accountable for the failures of this past week and all the crap that has gone before. We don't know how many lives have been lost in New Orleans and Mississippi - but it appears to be more than 9/11. This is a bigger tragedy because of that and the FACT that it could have been lessened with proper planning.

20. Seeing W impeached would be so wonderful. |
|
But I'm not going to hold my breath. He still has enough supporters among the Senate, Congress, and common people to keep an impeachment attempt blocked. I think even this horrible tragedy will not awaken the most vile among us.

21. I would have thought my post pie in the sky yesterday but |
|
then I saw David Brooks unload on PBS Newshour last night. He said, among other things, that not responding to Katrina quickly was as bad as leaving bodies on the battlefield; that coupled with Abu Ghraib, lack of planning in Iraq, and other failures of the past several years all adds up to conservatives having serious doubts about Bush. He even said how pissed he was watching tape run of Bush down in NO before he went on the air that evening - and that 'now he knows how Mark Shields must feel.' Shields wasn't on - but Oliphant was. Brooks made Oliphant sound like a rw conservative.
And there are others jumping the rw ship this week...
I'm predicting that this is the end or the beginning of the end of Bush and his cabal.

Boy do I hope you're right. But if this disaster has taught me anything, it has taught me to never underestimate the gall some of these people have.

10. We have to stick together, for DU, 2006 and 2008. |
|
Each person who feels theirs is the only correct belief is as misguided as people like Pat Buchanan. We are not going to get everything we want. I, for one, know I will likely be voting for candidates who do not support a national health care program. But, I realize the greater need is to shift the politics to the left in America so we can start having the discussions about how to make things better. Moving America to the left will take the support of a lot of people who are not going to get everything they want. We have to accept these facts if we are to win in 2006 and 2008. The future of our children depends upon our staying together.

And I offer my humblest of apologies.
The veneer has come OFF my "Mr. Nice Guy" demeanor and the rage and discontent that has been percolating inside for the past 5 years has boiled over with great force.
As all my emotions erupted forth, I know some of my fellow DUers got splashed, and for that I am 1)truly sorry, and 2) highly embarassed.
Great post, Mutley, and I couldn't agree more.

Priorities: sleep when tired, cry when sad, eat when hungry. Then it's easier to remember to point the anger at the real threats, and protect the backs of the friends.....friends aren't real friends unless they sometimes piss you off!
