Here's a new safety Rule -Please add yours to the list
NEW RULE

All medical care facilities should have certain colour roofs...like red or blue with separate generator run corresponding flashing lights. So in an emergency they can be spotted from the air and identified quickly.

In an emergency the Police, Fire, or emergency services department hits an emergency switch that sends out a wireless or radio signal that will trip the lights of those facilities automatically.

Tie that to the emergency switch to send metro transit authority people into action to send busses into action to meet at pre determined places for citizen pickup.

4. Virtually all hospitals - and many other buildings - have emerg generators
This has been the case for years ...... but maybe we need to reconsider where they're located. It seems to me the ones in New Orleans were located on the ground (typical for almost all of them).

I'd guess both the convention center and the superdome had emergency generators too.

I **like** your idea about specific roof colors for hospitals.

I wish I had something as equally creative. I would also like to see government assisted evacuations like other posters have mentioned in this thread.

In this day and age, I don't think it's too much to ask that each state create comprehensive evacuation plans of varying levels: from evacuating something as small as a few city blocks to evacuating numerous cities at once. When working on these plans, each state should work closely with first responders, Homeland Security, neighboring states, Red Cross, bus/truck drivers, and all levels of government from city to Federal.

The plans should then be shared with the citizens so that everyone knows what to do and what to expect. I would like to see checkpoints established in every neighborhood, kind of like bus stops where people can gather to be picked up by busses/trucks etc. The more poor the neighborhood, the more check points due to lack of personal transportation.
