Who has spoken TRUTH to POWER Better Than Kanye West?

I am searching my brain to recall other moments on national TV that were as bold or as brave as the words spoken by Kanye West at the Red Cross Fund raiser.

As I recall the Dixie Chicks were in concert, right?
I'm not putting the Dixie Chicks down at all, they were brave and took the heat with such grace.

But Kanye West spoke out for justice and for his people last night!

1. Yes that was a memorable moment!
This a.m. I caught the last bit of a statment scrolling across the bottom of the screen, said something like "Kayne Wests' comments do not reflect the views of this station or it's affiliates" I dont know if they were talking about CNN or what......I had just woke up.

2. The disclaimer was interesting... it mentioned a "script."
If it were really news, it wouldn't be scripted, would it?

6. They must not silence us any longer

Kanye gave more people the guts to speak out.

I'm sure that other artists and others will speak with more TRUTH.

Last night Al Sharpton was firm in his support of Kanye's message.

I am listening to Carol Mosley Braun on CNN now. She is passionate and on fire with her words.

7. re:Bush The Idiot
The Mayor could have used the public buses and transit to get as many people out of the city as possible out before the hurricane hit. They had five days notice the storm was coming. He knows there are many people with no transportation. He Knows most of these people live in the lower parts of the flood plain. He knows the levey would fail above a category 3. Some of the survival shopping started the first night of the flood. Most people assumed help would be there the next day. What can you do with big screen tv's without cable or power. Why were people shooting at the police. Why did it take so long to get water and a snack. The stores should have been used to help everyone instead of a few.

Most people had no way of leaving the city.

16. The mayor could have commender the bus and drivers
To move as many as possible. You start with sick and elderly, then pregnant women. Then Babies then Young children then older children all with their family. Then if possible everyone else. All able men should help load the and control traffic. Every person they could have gotten out before the storm would have helped. The sick, elderly and children have suffered the most.

10. This was far bigger than the Mayor

Kanye West was talking about who was NOT fighting for the people of New Orleans.

I am sure that the Mayor is not the focus of his remarks.
His remarks were focused on Bush the criminal and all of his crew of thugs.

14. Everybody from the Mayor on up failed the people in New Orleans
Everybody from the Mayor on up failed the people in New Orleans Including the President. Including the lawless thugs robbing, raping, and killing their brothers and sisters. NY had a big blackout a couple of years ago for several days and had no major crime. Mr. West could have stepped up and asked his people help their brothers and sisters instead of hurting them. The Crowd at the convention center did this on their own, they killed a man trying to rape a 13 year old girl.

17. The NY blackout of '03 lasted several days???
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 01:43 PM by VolcanoJen
Seriously, do work on your facts before coming here and lecturing us, 'k?

http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/08/14/power.outage/

In many parts, power was restored within hours. Hours. And people were in their homes, where they had shelter, food and water. They weren't stranded in a shelter they were told to go to, only to find out that nothing would be provided for them.

Kanye West is right, and you know it, and now, you're afraid.

19. Nobodys lecturing anybody.
This is a discussion fourm.
Kanye is a poser. "I am going to call my buisness agent and see what I can give" he said . Well he should have gone to walmart an buy some supplies, put them on his private plane and fly them to the closest aiport that is operating. He could have done this days ago. Us normal people are bring boats from suronding states. Many of these people are white red-neck bible thumpers with their fishing boats.

20. I think you should admit that comparing the current situation in NOLA...
... to the NYC blackout in 2003 is insensitive, naive, and, well, downright stupid. Where on earth did you pick up that talking point? I suggest you drop it. I see you already have.

Emotions are high, and Kanye cut to the chase and reached a lot of people with his statement. I admire his honesty and gumption. Too bad if it makes people like you uncomfortable.

His career won't be affected the way the Dixie Chicks were, because white red-neck bible thumpers never heard of Kanye West, and if they listened to his albums, wouldn't really "get" his message, anyway.

This is most certainly not the first time Kanye West has been critical, publically, of our current society.

He's right, you know it, and you're afraid.

22. Mr. West did what he felt in his heart

He saw the pictures on the television screen.
He formed his opinions shared by millions all over the world.
He heard his people begging for food and water.

I would think that his Brothers and Sisters would not have been able to hear him if they were at the Convention Center or in the street.

Recall, they had no access to communication.
I am sure they were NOT sitting with their friends and watching the Red Cross Fund Raiser on cable and eating popcorn.

13. "George Bush Hates Black People!"
They played the whole thing on CNN HN this morning. My first thought was, "how long until he's Dixie Chicked?"

I'm betting that his next single will be "Jesus Walks, Bush Flies". :D

18. Do you guys ever listen to Kanye?
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 01:52 PM by VolcanoJen
I'm a huge fan of his album "College Dropout." God, I didn't take that one out of my car cd player for a month. I haven't picked up "Late Registration" yet, which I think just came out last week.

Kanye is a social rapper who rails against the materialism and violence common in rap today.

He's fucking brilliant, he's an amazing performer, and if you've never heard of him before, well, you have now.

Go buy his albums.

Jesus Walks
God, show me the way, because the Devil's tryin' to break me down
Jesus Walks with me
The only thing I pray is that my feet don't fail me now

or

Oh when it all, it all falls down
I'm tellin' you, it all falls down...

But the people highest up got the lowest self esteem
The prettiest people do the ugliest things
For the road to riches and diamond rings
We shine because they hate us, floss cause they degrade us
We trying to buy back our 40 acres
And for that paper, look how low we a'stoop
Even if you in a Benz, you still a nigga in a coop

His newest single "Diamonds from Sierra Leone," discusses where those diamonds we all crave come from...
