CNN'S Aaron Brown show last night |
|
In my opinion, was one of the most enlightened I have seen in a long while.
He stated something about how Katrina peeled back a thin layer of America and revealed something we don't want to talk about.....poverty in America and racism and class inequities.
Most revealing was that as of last night - they STILL HAVE NOT EVACUATED CHARITY HOSPITAL. The private hospital, across the road was completely evacuated even non essential personnel - but Charity (a public hospital) still has over 200 patients who need evacuating. He wondered why..........and postulated that it was because these were the poorest of the poor, without medical insurance etc.
He suggested that there might be a logical reason why this occured, but then hesitated, shook his head and said, " BUT I have absolutely no idea of what it could possibly be........."
Anyone else watch it? Thoughts and comments?

He used to be a local anchor in Seattle.
I applaud his honesty here.

3. I watched it as well, it was excellent, over all. |
|
The blatant difference shown by the evacuation of NON-ESSENTIAL personnel from the PRIVATE hospital while critical care patients were left waiting because they were in a PUBLIC hospital that cares for all economic levels was appalling.
Racism and classism is front and center now no matter how hard some are going to work to put it under cover again.

12. I worked at Charity and Tulane in 1994 while completing a residency |

at TUMC. I loved Charity. One of the oldest and most historic hospitals in the US, with a very rich history. I purchased a book while there, on Charity Hospital (written by a Tulane faculty member) and the photos of the segregated wards (by race) were unbelievable! That this problem still exists to the extent it does is appalling to me. Maybe if there is ANY silver lining in this hideous tragedy, it will be to open up hearts and minds to the existence of real poverty in this country, which does seem to fall mostly upon racial lines. (One of the medical students I tutored while I was there told me that her great (great?)grandfather was one of the architects of Charity! She told me this after I expressed my extreme interest in Charity.)
I love your city Swamp Rat, and I grieve right along with you!

7. Aaron Brown is an honorable man |
|
He, in my opinion, has always given us the truth, as much as his CNN will let him say.
There was a quite a thread bashing him the other day, with a bunch of ignorant people posting.
