The Republican Party has come crashing down |
|
The chaos in New Orleans is the result of numerous failures on the part of Republican leaders--
- Cutbacks to programs to help improve urban communities, such as after school programs - Cutbacks to programs to educational and social welfare programs, such as Head Start - Cutbacks to programs designed to protect the cities - Elimination of things like affirmative action that created new opportunities for the urban poor - Efforts to address reverse discrimination, without equal efforts to address discrimination - Campaigns geared towards the middle class and wealthy, with hardly ever a mention of the poor - Military expansionism without proper attention to the economic and human costs, both at home and abroad - and so on
The Republican philosophy that started with Bush has come crashing down. Now is the chance for Democrats to propose something new.

Don't forget the privatization, downsizing and outsourcing of FEMA, as well as making it subordinate to Homeland Security, with no independent funding or cabinet-level visibility. And don't forget the refusal to fund Army Corps of Engineers' request to repair the levy. We've been hearing for years that we can no longer think of of the gov't in paternalistic terms, and that freeing the gov't from having to provide for everyone will free up capital and stimulate job and wealth creation for all. Despite the fact that this logic does not work, this administration went one further by INCREASING public spending drastically (on defense), thereby assuring that there would be no stimulus to the economy. This past week, while undeniably tragic, did provide a rare opportunity to see the future of living in Bushworld.
