Governments pledge aid after Katrina

The State Department said offers of help had been received from:

Australia, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Belgium, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Greece, Guyana, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, Portugal, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.

International organizations also offered help ranging from medical teams to tents to cash donations. They include NATO, the Organization of American States, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, and the World Health Organization.

A State Department official said a needs assessment was being done to determine which offers would be accepted.

4. Didn't we criticize Russia for not accepting help and

letting people on a sub die. Haven't they offered search and rescue help? How long can people survive in a flooded attic with no food or water?

Bush would be seen as a weak pResident. Letting all those UN loving nations help us, the strongest, most important country in the world, would be treason. Only socialist/communists would surrender and allow international aid.

Really, this is a political decision to keep the base in-tact.

7. That is just so lame. Immediate, short, and long term aid is needed.

The immediate aid is pretty much a no brainer to people not associated with this inept, criminally negligent administration. Long term support needs some assessment.

They don't want the aid because it makes them look bad, like we don't have the necessary resources, infrastructure and leadership to address any kind of emergency disaster, which, quite obviously, we don't.

We were far better prepared September 11, 2001 with what was left of FEMA organization developed in the 1990's. George and his boys have destroyed that and replaced it with pretty much...nothing.

Our enemies abroad know that now. It is all too clear.
