PLEASE DON'T LET THIS SINK! Important
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 02:01 PM by Horse with no Name
Write your congressman and news media TODAY! This is something we can do to effect change.
I just read that some of the evacuees are being put in toxic waste dumps?
Insist that the evacuees have an independent ombudsman available to them 24 hours a day. These people should not be left at the mercy of the government without some recourse. The last time they were left at the mercy of the government, they ended up losing everything. These people need a form of redress that isn't government related.

For those of you who are not familiar with what an ombudsman is, here is wikepedia

n ombudsman is an official, usually but not always appointed by the government, who is charged with representing the interests of the public by investigating and addressing complaints reported by individual citizens.

2. OK. So far the TV reporters and columnists have been their ombudsmen.
They stepped into the breach. Without them the world wouldn't have known this latest atrocity of government from this criminally negligent administration.

3. That is true
But after the hoopla dies down--in the coming weeks and months--there needs to be a voice for these people if the government suddenly cuts off their food stamps, housing, or tries to shove them in unsafe shelters, etc.
There needs to be a voice for them if the government tries to force them to sign their property over.
These people need someone for the long term until their lives settle down again.
All it comes down to is a 1-800- number for them to call to tell someone they are being mistreated.
Unless these people need them, the ombudsmen won't be in their lives.
I just think it is something we really need to insist on.

4. Oh, absolutely. I fully agree, it needs to be an organized & sanctioned.
But George and his friends really hate having folks looking over their shoulders to see what it is they are really doing.

I will make some phone calls.

7. I'll do whatever I can to help, if you could just provide
a link to your source for that information.

I can't call or write my congresspeople and just say "somebody told me this."

We could spread this story much more effectively if we have the backup information.

8. There is no source
:)
Many times, groups of people are appointed an ombudsman, especially when dealing with government entities, so that they are always assured a voice, especially when you are dealing with a population that has a high potential to be screwed by the people who are supposed to taking care of them.
For instance, employees out on Workmens Comp have them, Nursing Home patients have them, etc.
I just think that they need to make sure that these people have one too.

9. No, a source on people being put in toxic waste dumps.
That's the part I was asking about.
