We already mainly know what happened here. We don't need to start spreading unsubstantiated conjectures.

* and Co. were caught with their pants down. They ignored clear warnings and predictions. They were still in their usual Rove mode of "catapulting the propaganda" when this hit. It got a lot worse before these idiots were shocked into action. At first they made a lame attempt at spin, but quickly corrected that. Ironically, we may have Fox News to thank for part of that. When Fox reporters, normally a safe base for him, began melting down on the air and undermining their news anchors, * and Co must have realized that there was no saving the situation. Only very fast action would fix it. By that time, * had activated the NG, but when he saw the meltdown he must then have leaned very hard on some people.

Chertoff and Brown should be fired as soon as that is possible.
