Woman from Mustang, OK, survived in a mall with other tourists |
|
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 04:22 PM by SoCalDem
Thanks God for saving them at the mall. they survived from the food court.. (do we call it "finding" or "looting"?)
Apparently they were just rescued..she said they "heard" about shooting and looting...
Maybe they "found" some electronics with battery packs , and could watch tv or surf the net while they were at the mall

1. Shoot them! Shoot them all! |
|
That's all I have to say, as I sit here in my air-conditioned apartment, in my comfy chair, eating dinner and surfing the net.

2. Did they leave money to pay? |
|
:sarcasm:
In all seriousness, I could care less when it gets to a matter of survival and you are 5 days into it, near death and hope seems lost. I wish them good health and happy hunting!

4. In cases of survival "looting" would fall under the defense of necessity |
|
I believe the defense of necessity says you are allowed to break the law if it is necessary for survival, and if there is no legal alternative available. A very high percentage of the acts being called looting would fall under that categorization. Some of them are acts of heroism (like the young man that rescued the bus load of people after taking a school bus).
In a disaster of this magnitude it is deplorable that we hear so much about so called looting. Once the scale of death is known (maybe up to 100,000), the fact that "looting" was made into an issue will be an embarrassment.

One classic scenario.. "Your mother needs a medicine to stay alive.
which is the better good?"
to steal it from a pharmacy so she can stay alive, or to leave it there because no one is there to take your money.. or you have no money, or the store is closed or ..any number of scenarios follow.

10. There is a continuum of circumstances of course |
|
Some would even be recognized by the most conservative people as acceptable (e.g. a diabetic taking insulin from an abandoned drugstore in the middle of a massive flood). Some are not condoned by many people (e.g. stealing insulin from a drugstore in normal times, because you don't have the money).
With a functioning social support network (i.e. a welfare state in the sense Keynes meant it) most of these dilemmas don't come up. For example, public health care in Canada means that the second scenario just doesn't arise (which is not to say that Canada's system is perfect, but it makes for a fairer society).

9. Okay, explain this to me... |
|
If NO was so overrun with murderous looters, how is it that a FOOD COURT in a mall wasn't touched except by those in this story. Surely the LOCAL looters would know that mall very well.
To me, this is just more proof the danger in NO is being way over hyped for some specific reason.

14. As someone pointed out in another thread, |
|
You barely see white people in the MSM coverage. Just wondering if folks got differing instructions in an effort to segregate the throngs? There WERE white folks in New Orleans, weren't there?

|
broke down the doors of the mall and told them to use what they needed of food and drinks, nothing else. Did you hear any mention of them in that report?
