Mayor Nagin: "CIA could wipe me out"
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 04:59 PM by oddtext
whoah, Nagin just on CNN.

"i'm trying to get all the resources to get these people help. I'm screaming at the governor; i'm screaming at the *, and i won't stop until everyone is safe. the CIA could come in here and wipe me out in any minute, but i'm not stopping until everyone is safe."

thought that might support some people's contentions that Nagin looked "worked over" after meeting with * yesterday.

1. Whoa!
There's no doubt he's correct about this, and I'm glad he said it aloud.

I don't have cable TV, so only read his response here on DU of his meeting with the boy king. Had a hard time believing what he said was all there was.

Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 05:01 PM by bliss_eternal
or qualify what he said. That Tony Harris guy, on the desk now. I want to punch him!

:wtf:

When are these reporters going to just do their jobs, and stop putting words in people's mouths?

Prior to seeing this guy, I thought CNN was doing really well with this...

may need to go to the zone. It seems as if the ones that are there have come face to face with their humanity and their mortality. Those who are freshly showered and blow dried are trying to steer back to what they know. :spank: Let's see if their executive management and colleagues that faced all of it, allow it.

the change and how I didn't appreciate the way they suckered me into thinking for a moment that they maybe had grown some cajones, tolally misleading me.
If for nothing else these find folks who started DU can go to sleep at night or whenever they want to knowing full well they have and are making a difference, a difference for the good of OUR COUNTRY.

TRUE PATRIOTS

I might add I think DU will ultimately move into more and bigger things like radio, tv and newsprint.

Bush and his gang of thugs are no better than cheap mafia wannabes (no offense intended to the long, rich albeit evil and violent history of the real mafia.) and I'm sure they've taken to actively threatening people. Not too many options left if this is the game folks.

53. I noticed yesterday that Harris was going out of his way
to "see the administration's side" in everything he reports on this disaster. Tony Harris is, I think, fairly new at CNN, and I have been sizing him up over the last few weeks. He tends to "editorialize" quite a lot on the stories he reports, so this is nothing new. I wasn't sure how I felt about that yet, but just in the last two days I have been getting VERY irritated with him. He's begun to sound like most of the reporters/anchors on the Fox News Channel. I *expect* that from them, slanting the news and throwing in their own two cents' worth to excuse W and his administration's misdeeds and defending them whenever they can. I DON'T expect it from other news networks, and I plan to write CNN about Mr. Harris's bias.

I don't mind him adding his own comments beyond the bare bones of a story; but if he is going to sound like Faux "news" reporters, then he should work for THEM. IMO.

59. Besides, saying that outright, calling the CIA by name,
could be a way of keeping them from offing him. It has long been known that those being persecuted and threatened by the very government that is supposed to be protecting them can sometimes find safety in the media. Once their story is told and those who threaten their lives are named publicly, it would then be very suspicious if "accidents" occur to end their lives....

Let's hope for the best for Nagin, because I think in spite of his faults and *possible* insufficiency in preparation for the disaster, he has had it with the complete cynicism of the Feds in their incomprehensible response to Katrina's devastation. I heard that he had well-off hotel guests from near where he is staying ushered down to the busses when they finally arrived at the Superdome, and saw to it that they boarded busses AHEAD of those who had been waiting and suffering for DAYS in that hellhole. If that's true, he will have to answer for it.

But it could just be more wicked PR from BushCo ... we'll have to wait and see. Nagin also seemed quite at ease striding alongside our fake President at the airport yesterday as well, though I noticed he put about six feet of space between himself and W as they walked. So we can't make much of that brief video one way or the other -- and Nagin had already spent some time with W's ... uh, "assistants" by then, I imagine.

Meanwhile, I'm VERY glad to hear him blast the "relief" effort of this administration and the entire federal apparatus! As long as he is telling it like it is and refusing to back down, I'm for him. SOMEONE for damn sure needs to find the courage to tell the TRUTH and clear up the confusion which seems to be made worse by stories the Bush administration puts out constantly on this catastrophe.

I'm afraid Rove and the rest of BushCo is COUNTING on a huge amount of confusion to make sorting out the truth impossible now and very difficult later. But I also believe the sheer weight of the evidence and especially the thousands of eyewitness stories of those who have suffered through such a traumatic ORDEAL along the Gulf Coast -- stories we WILL eventually hear -- will sink this administration as surely as New Orleans sank under the waters.

I really don't believe he's gonna be able to wiggle out of THIS one.

85. I agree with those who already responded to this question.
Sorry it took me a little while to get back here. (And btw, as an aside, I sure appreciate how DUers jump in to respond when someone asks a question of a poster and that particular poster hasn't gotten back to reply! One of the many terrific things about this bunch I'm getting to know and starting to think of as my friends. Already I know you all are what I'd call "like-minded people"! THANKS.)

I was put in mind of the scene from the original "Godfather" movie, when Marlon Brando as Don Corleone was talking to the old fella who was a businessman in the don's "area of operations." The "muscle" guys were standing around the room, as I recall, while the don talked with the poor, frightened business owner as if they were good friends. He made it clear what that "friendship" was based on without openly threatening the man. Such a scene could as easily play out in real life with the muscle, the bullies alone, saying all that needed to be said.

W didn't have to speak any threatening words himself for the message to get through loud and clear.

Actually, I've heard it both ways. I heard, for instance, that the mayor of New Orleans and the governor of Louisiana both "gave the President an earful" when he arrived on scene for the first time yesterday. And I also heard this story about the mayor being threatened -- either overtly or in so many words -- by the President's "hired thugs."

I suppose it's not hard to believe that both of these things could be true. If Mayor Nagin actually YELLED at Georgie Bunkerboy, that might have ASSURED that he would be threatened in no uncertain terms by W's strong men. I think they call that "strongarm" when it's robbery -- done without a weapon in sight but all the same so menacing that it is considered to be as serious as if done with a weapon!

52. All he said was that he had yelled at Bush in private and that's
when he was afraid the CIA would come get him at any moment. I was thiniking he meant the secret service, so I am assuming he raised his voice with Bush. I know he and the governor of LA met with Bush on (on Air Force One, I think) Friday just before Bush left LA. This was reported ysterday on CNN. And the comment about yelling at Bush was made today, so I assume that was the metting at which such a tongue lashing occurred.

Don't you just LOVE Mayor Nagin. He speaks truth to power.

62. I heard a report on one of the news networks, sorry I don't
remember which one it was, in which either a reporter who was present or one of the Bushbots himself was saying that Nagin AND Governor Blanco "really gave an earful to the President" in private when he first met with them. This was someone either in the administration or one of the reporters who are allowed in behind the scenes near the President, one of "the White House press corps;" and he was telling it publicly. It was not a reporter or politician from "our side" describing the incident. Sure wish I could recall where I heard this and who exactly it was who was speaking, but I was in the other room. It was a news network and it was today, though.

And, uh, I should specify ... "our side" would be the side of THE TRUTH!

It made my heart sing to just *imagine* Nagin and Blanco giving this ersatz "president" both barrels about the Federal response! And I wondered if either of them had the guts to ask him WHY he could not have cut short his vacation in view of the fact that this is such an immense and intense catastrophe requiring the power of the Presidency to organize the relief effort and get it in motion. That would have been more personal and therefore more difficult, but maybe they at least IMPLIED the questioning of His Majesty's very own behavior....

I HOPE SO! Heaven knows few if any ever criticize the Little Prince because they value their hide, methinks.

I'll bet there will be SONGS asking the hard questions, though -- I'm working on one myself, with horribly tragic inspiration which always makes for powerful music. VERY SOON we will be hearing some pointed songs about all this by major artists on the radio! Who, after all, were the very first people to go into that hellhole of a Superdome and promise to help those there -- and then DELIVERED in a big way last night on the telethon? MUSICIANS ... ARTISTS!!!

Hell, all of Hollywood is likely to be blasting this fake President and his wicked administration for YEARS TO COME with productions from movies and documentaries to commercials, and Americans will be eager to watch and listen to them. Can you picture the movie -- it would have to be a miniseries with several installments -- about this catastrophic natural disaster compounded and worsened exponentially by the utter failure of George Bush and his administration and appointees?

65. The mayor himself provides more insight into the problem....
if you're willing to listen to his entire interview:

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article10093.htm

Apparently there is more than just a lot of oil passing through New Orleans, there are also a lot of drugs. Much of the violence and looting could be the result of drug addicts needing a fix. Of course, they won't go into the details of this on CNN, its probably more important to paint the NO black community as being crime-prone.

And part of why I said it was psychologically understandable. I imagine there is a bit of forced detox going on and that is ugly in the best of circumstances. I don't care what anyone says, my heart is breaking for the drug addicts too. This is a piss poor way to institute a "treatment program."

88. Okay, on this specifically, I did hear something very early this a.m. --
and posted about it later today on another thread.

Here's a link to that thread, which is titled: FAA says, "There has been no such report.", of snipers in NOLA

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4611169

Here is what "discerning christian," one voice dissenting among the others, said in response to the original post:

That's just one persons version of the truth. I watched CNN all day Thurs. and Fri.. and I heard Dr. Sange Ghutah, (I'm sorry, I don't remember the spelling of his last name) but he does a lot of the medical reporting for CNN. He was on the roof of the County Hosp. helping to evacuate the most critical patients, and shots were fired from a roof across the street, at the Drs. trying to do their jobs!! He said "it was a sniper"!! So.......who's right?

and here's what I posted in reply:

Dr. Gupta did not hear the shots. Not when I saw him reporting, and not when I was only listening to the audio of him reporting (when I was in the other room). What I heard him reporting was that the DOCTORS had told him they had heard shots not long before the rescue helicopter tried to set down on the helipad and then they would not land.

Today I heard either the same or another doctor at Charity Hospital saying very tiredly (like he had answered the question a thousand times) that there had been SOME problems with looters and the staff had also heard some shooting outside. But his tone of voice said he was NOT very concerned about these so-called "violent problems," and he seemed downright frustrated at the discontinued rescue efforts due to some shooting in the area. He didn't come right out and say it, I felt because he can't know for sure; but it seemed to me he thought the shooting was NOT at the rescue helicopter but general firing of weapons in the chaos on the ground surrounding the hospital where so many are wandering about like Moses and the lost children of Israel looking for the Promised Land!

Only they don't even have a Moses, unless they've picked one for themselves....

I *definitely* was not mistaken about the physician at Charity this morning just after five a.m. indicating that the violence was nowhere near sufficient to prevent rescue crews from evacuating sick, even DYING, patients and exhausted, desperate hospital staff.

I have wondered from the start and voiced my doubts here at DU the last couple of days if these reports of shooting or violence aimed at rescuers and relief workers have not been exaggerated -- and some of them completely made up. In the cases where there actually HAVE been shots fired when rescuers or relief crews came near the desperate survivors, no one even hazarded a GUESS as to WHO it was doing the shooting. The implication was that it was the seemingly omnipresent "looters" and "thugs." No camera I've seen has captured any of these so-called violent rampagers doing anything except looting. I heard the shots in the night when Chris someone, a young reporter whose last name I thought was given as Wallace but that may not be right, was reporting from a police station in New Orleans. The cop he was talking to ducked, and so did he as a result. Later more shots were heard, but the reporter said it was impossible to tell WHERE the shots were aimed.

Right now on CNN a woman on the phone is ranting irately about this very subject and more. Appears the sheeplings are not just buying that violence story without questioning it. And in hindsight, this may become a VERY significant part of the total tale of mishandling, deception, staged photo ops, and outright trickery by the Bush administration. Anything to try to make him and his appointees look better in the face of what I just heard called "blistering" criticism. The waves are growing higher on that criticism as the tide of it continues to come ashore.

In the end, there may not be enough water even in New Orleans to float George Bush's boat!

~*~*~*~*~

Oh, and Dr. Sanjay Gupta's first name as well as his last name was mangled in spelling by "discerning christian," who apparently doesn't even capitalize Christ's name ... which I found rather strange....

I know, you can hear my sarcasm now, and I'm sorry I can't hold it back any longer, especially about another DUer. I sure had to wonder about that one, though.

44. Nagin should be featured speaker at the 24th rally...
and will that be intense. Even pre-Katrina there was a storm brewing that must have been scaring the bush-boys, with a anti-war Mom getting such support.

Now the storm has gone clear to a Category 4. We must never underestimate the power of Democrats to call for calm and to preserve the status quo, and a "reasonable answer to Iraq" (i.e. slight change in management, troops home in a few years, continued support for genocide in Palestine and beyond) but i suspect the anger out there will not be easily contained, nor should it.

All out for the 24th, and beyond!

He should spend a little bit of his time, and do something highly unusual: Tell the American people exactly what the Bush people did and said to coerce him into line with their efforts.

I think the American people deserve to know anyway.

Let's encourage Nagin to spill more info *before* the CIA takes him out, if that is to happen.

55. Bush probably said something like this:
If you don't put on a smile and tell the reporters that everything's fine because my administration is helping you out, then not only will I sic the CIA on you and your family and claim it was a sniper but I will start gunning down the citizens of New Orleans like so much worthless sawdust. You think the National Guard has orders to shoot to kill now, just you wait if you don't coooperate! And I will make it hell for them once disease starts to set hold. They will NEVER get health care! And just you wait until they try to get help from their mortgage companies and creditors. I will make you regret the day you spoke out publicly against me if you do not cooperate and dance!

And Nagin, like any decent human being, will do what he has to do. Shut up and smile.

in one of their "whisper campaigns"

Themes

-The hurricane made him crazy
-The guilt of messing up the evacuation is getting to him
-Blaming others for his failings
-He didn't REALLY sacrifice, he had food and water, and clean clothes.
-He's putting down the efforts of the 1st responders
-He's a partisan Democrat (who donated to Bush in 1999)

We've seen the same movie before.

New Orleans mayor calm after Bush meeting

BRETT MARTEL - Associated Press

The cursing had stopped. The tears were gone. Mayor Ray Nagin returned from his meeting with President Bush on Friday a picture of calm...

"I feel much better. I feel like we've gotten everyone's attention and hopefully they'll continue to do what they're doing," Nagin said from the downtown Hyatt hotel, his temporary lodgings and command post since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Big Easy.

"I'm cautiously optimistic. I want to see it happen (Saturday). I want to see it happen next week. Then, when I see consistency of delivery, I'll feel like there's a light at the end of the tunnel."

His comments came a day after he broke into tears during a radio interview and told the federal officials to "get off your asses and let's do something."

By nightfall Friday, his tone had changed.

"Today was a turning point, I think," he said. "My philosophy is never get too high, never get too low. ... I always try to keep my emotions in check and yesterday I kind of went off a little bit. I was worried about that, but it maybe worked out. I don't know. If the CIA slips me something and next week you don't see me, you'll all know what happened."

Nagin said Bush gave him a "hearty" greeting and did not seem offended by his public outburst.

"I do think the pleas for help basically got the nation's attention, and the nation's attention got everybody to stop and re-evaluate what was going on, including the president. ... He basically said, 'Look, our response was not what it should have been and we're going to fix it right now.'"

Nagin said evacuation has been hampered by officials' difficulty grasping where state authority ends and federal authority begins and he said he urged the president and Gov. Kathleen Blanco to sort it out.

97. What kind of line of bull is that--that they were feeding him...?!
"Nagin said evacuation has been hampered by officials' difficulty grasping where state authority ends and federal authority begins and he said he urged the president and Gov. Kathleen Blanco to sort it out."

How many natural disasters has this country faced with efficiency and with an immediate sorting out of responsibility for action? It's part of long term planning! It what first responders DO! It's one of the most vital functions of government! That is utter B.S. that "officials" had difficulty "grasping" state vs. federal authority. And very clearly it was the Feds who had their oil-soaked Bush Cartel heads up their asses!

Mayor Nagin has my sympathy, and I think the man has tremendous courage. But I think it must be the result of fatigue that he swallowed--or, in any case, repeated--that bit of malarkey.

-------

The Bush Cartel has screwed this country over so many times now, and in such huge ways, you'd think people would start asking HOW it is that they could have remained in power. Well, sorry to say, it is my conclusion that it wasn't just far rightwing electronic voting machine companies using SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code to "count" all our votes, but it was ALSO, a) DEMOCRATIC election officials, like Connie McCormack in Los Angeles, who have SOLD OUT OUR RIGHT TO VOTE for the perks, and the lavish lobbying benefits, and the power of the electronic voting BOONDOGGLE, and b) War Democrats who think that the antiwar majority in this country needs to be "controlled."

Corruption and collusion in the Democratic Party leadership. What they've done seems insane--permitting Bushite companies to gain control over vote tabulation. It is not insane. It is deliberate. That's why they said NOTHING about the 2004 election--THE most corrupted election in the history of fascist coups.

58% of the American people opposed the Iraq war BEFORE the invasion. BEFORE all the lies were exposed; BEFORE all the horror and costs of it were known. Feb. '03. Across the board in all polls. 58%!

That number dipped only once, during the weeks of the invasion when U.S. troops were at max risk, then went right back up to nearly 60% where it remained throughout the election (and is over 70% today).

The great majority of Americans disapprove of EVERY major Bush policy, foreign and domestic, way up in the 60% to 70% range. You name it. The Iraq war. Torture policy. Social Security. The deficit. Women's rights. And this has been going on for over a year--massive disagreement, on every issue!

So you tell me how these mass murderers and master thieves got "ELECTED"!!!!!!!!!!

We've ended up with ONE PARTY--the WAR PARTY--and we're not going to have anything different until we throw these election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor'--or maybe into a Louisiana levee!

There is no way we can avoid having a War Democrat imposed on us as president, given how our votes are being "tabulated" and by whom. The only thing we CAN do is start getting rid of these electronic voting machines at the local level, so, eventually, we can start electing true representatives of the people. We will meanwhile have to put up with an expanded Mideast war and a Draft--neither of which Bush can do; they need a War Democrat to do them, and to take the grief for them, so they can install Jeb in '12. That's the situation, in my view. And the ONLY remedy that I can see is methodical, insistent, patient, successful election reform.

Outrage is not enough. Protests are not enough. We have to understand HOW these criminals are still in power, and WHY they are oblivious to the will of the people. It's because they DON'T HAVE TO WORRY about elections any more!

will touch him. However, that doesn't mean he won't be Rove'd to death and hung out to dry when the inquiries come. I think there is enough blame to go around on this one, and as much as I support all of what Nagin is doing with his time to get help and stick it to Bush, I think he shares in some of the culpability here. I suspect he will be made to be the sole person responsible, however. Any future career in politics will be over for him.

He was called the Ice Pick because he was coldly willing to do anything to get the results he wanted. He was in Dallas when JFK was murdered. His old friend's son tried to murder his own President Reagan. Many, many, many of old man Bush's opponents in the press and politics have met mysterious ends.

Nagin has good reason to be scared of the CIA - he should be. There are sociopaths at the helm of this once great democracy.

it's no tinfoilhat shit. we all know it intuitively, and nagin is probably thinking of these things, plus is aware of the strange and unexplained happenings on 9-11 how effectively all that was shut down and the purges within the Company. i don't doubt that these things create at least a strong suspicion, if there was not an overt threat, which would lead a man compelled to speak out against * to be concerned.
