The charity I decided on is HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 07:52 PM by Proud2BAmurkin
Couldn't bring myself to donate to the Bush ass-kissing red cross. Habitat offical was just on CNN laying out their plan for building homes for the victims.

1. good choice.
I donated to the Red Cross right away, but later, when most people forget what had happened, my money will go to HfH.

3. There was a spokesman for Habitat on CNN a few minutes ago
Talking about how Habitat is going to construct homes across the country, box 'em up, and ship them to the areas hit by Katrina as soon as the infrastructure is in place.

4. Head of HFH was just on CNN
Said one of the things they are going to do is "housing in a box". They will be building homes in various cities around the country, then disassemble them and ship them to the hurricane-affected areas so that people will have homes to live in. I thought that was cool. If they do any of that in Seattle or somewhere near, I will pick up a hammer and help out!

8. Same Here
I know people in the organization. The best charity for the long term revival of NO. Probably the best run charity in the world.

12. Donate to Habitat for Humanity
They will help people at least as well as the Red Cross. This will also enormously piss off the many Republicans who see this tragedy as a way to rebuild New Orleans as a wealthy class only Oil corporate kingdom. This will be their first use of their new Eminent Domain ruling.

Hey, how long did it take a wealthy white couple in Alabama to have fighter jets and the FBI sent to Aruba?

13. Jimmy Carter and I thank you...
I expect a bunch of local chapters all over this nation will be pitching in for the Gulf coast communites in the upcoming months. If I can swing it, I'll go, too.

15. Excellent charity to donate to IMO
I know the people who run my local branch. It's an honest charity that does beautiful things for people.

They treat the people they help with dignity. That's really important to me.

Good choice!

16. I spent nearly a year working part-time for HFH
This was in Orange County, California. I volunteered my time after my own business went under and while I was between jobs. I showed up about 3 mornings per week and did everything from hauling trash and lumber to painting, laying in insulation, and screwing in drywall. The particular people in charge of the project were VERY VERY right wing. They tried to get me to engage in a political discussion but I declined. However, after nearly a year there, I finally popped my cork and spoke up. It was the last time I ever worked there. I had to quit because it became impossible to work with them. In fact, the project foreman when I first applied there said that any liberals needn't apply to do volunteer work for them as they were a conservative organization ... point blank. Habitat For Humanity calls itself a Christian Ecumenical Ministry. Nearly everyone I encountered in the two sites on which I worked was very much into religious conservative causes.

They do fantastic work, however, in every other respect and they do help poor people get into homes even in locations where there doesn't seem to be any way to obtain cheap land. Often, the land is sold to them at a steep discount. I don't mean to discourage anyone to give to HFH and in fact I encourage people to do it. I just wanted to let people know that this is a very conservative leaning organization, at least to the extent that I was exposed to it. Maybe the "Christian Ecumenical Ministry" that they proclaim to stand for is a little less ultra conservative in other parts of the country or at other sites.
