I would no more express my sympathies than I would to Hitler's family, Frank Cherry's family or David Duke's family.
Rot in hell, Rehnquist.

Bush is so very, very bad that he makes Nixon look presidential. At least Nixon had the integrity to resign in shame when his shenanigans came to light. Bush will continue to try and bluster his way through.

Remember what it took for Nixon to even budge. The people had to converge on him and the rest of the crooks and avoid the military.

Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 10:55 PM by VelmaD
he was law clerk for Justice Robert Jackson are appalling. He actually advised the man to reaffirm Plessy v. Ferguson and the concept of "seperate but equal" back in the 50s. The man was a racist, pure and simple.

If you ever have a few hours to kill, pick up "The Renquist Choice" by John Dean. Interesting reading on how Renquist ended up on the court (with all sorts of fun background on just how racist and sexist the people inside the Nixon administration could be).

30. I can't dance on anyone's grave right now
If this gets me banned so be it. I was raised to forgive. The Irish Catholic in me is mourning the thousands of dead that I can't put a name on as well as Rehnquist. No ones life is more important than anothers.
I can however respect a person who made his life the justice system. I do not agree with many of his decisions but I have respect for the man himself. If that makes me a Nazi racist in your minds then I don't have anything left to say here.

You DO NOT know me personally. You do not know my life or my family. You do know that I'm white but most of my family is not. You assume.
Thanks a lot people.
Good luck and God bless.

Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 11:04 PM by VelmaD
I can only assume it's because you are not well informed about many of the truly scary opinions he held. Read my post above...the man supported Plessy v. Ferguson fer chrissake. He intimidated blacks at the polls in Arizona. He did everything he could to erode our 4th ammendment rights against unwarranted search and seizure. He was a big fan of expanding the death penalty. And he was completely opposed to women having the right to control their own bodies. What exactly was it about him you respected?

Matthew Hale (a notorious racist leader of the World Church of the Creator) wanted to "devote his life to justice" as well.

Fortunately the IL bar did not accept him.

David Duke tried running for La governor. Say he died and he'd been governor. Why should I feel sympathy for such scum?

People can forgive all they want but I won't unless it's asked for. Rehnquist never made ammends with his racist background. Some people can and do change (I recall hearing how George Wallace regretted what he had done). I never saw an evidence Rehnquist did though.

49. All this schadenfreude
Reminds me of the fact that, when I was younger, I hated Reagan intensely. I swore up and down that, on the day he died, no matter where I was, I would drop whatever I was doing and throw a party, and throw a party every year thereafter on the anniversary of his death. Then, soon after his reign of bullshit was over, his deterioration became evident, and it became evident that his "I don't remember" crap wasn't simply all an act. When he finally did die the long, lingering, humiliating death he did, I wasn't as happy as I thought I would have been, as it was the sort of death I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. That was his karma.

Rehnquist is dead. That was his karma. During his time on the Court, he brought dishonor to himself and to the nation. May God have mercy on his soul.

Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 12:21 AM by friesianrider
I personally am on the fence about this, as I think most should be. Yes, he was a bigoted, nasty old man, but does that mean we should spit on his grave? I don't think so, but maybe I'm wrong. I think the farthest I'd go is saying "good riddance."

Although, I never quite understood why people are so much more respected when they die, or why when someone dies, all of a sudden everyone is supposed to never again speak a bad word about them.

Surely if Clinton died (God forbid), the Freepers would be saying things much worse than what the OP did. That being said, I like to think we at DU are better people than the Freeptards.

On a side note, I often feel like I don't fit in here, but I still don't leave for any great length of time. This is, for the most part, a good group of people. Sometimes, given the current state of affairs, we just get a little too emotional - it should be understood.

57. Well, that's true...
But Rehnquist did plenty of judging in his day, and it surely affected many people's lives negatively...moreso than anyone saying "good riddance." It is always a shame when a life ends, but sometimes some people think the world may be better off without someone who did more bad in their lifetime than good. I'm not sure Rehnquist falls into this category, but I suppose everyone is entitled to their own opinions. :)

65. The Point Is...
NOW Bush will have the opportunity to appoint someone even worse.

PERIOD.

Frankly, I was sweating Rehnquist's death. I was hoping that old guy would hang on long enough for a Democrat to appoint his successor (or at least ANY Republican other than Bush).

For the Chimp to have TWO vacancies is very, very frightening.

I do not care if Hitler and McCarthy were the retiring justices- as long as they stayed on long enough to keep this piece of shit sitting in the Oval Office from having even more influence on our country's future, that would be all that matters.
