1. Can we get one of these on the "greatest"?
Sometimes I only get to read the "greatest" and one thread that was combined was already there.

3. The news of one elderly man dying in the comfort of his own home...
....just leaves me apathethic. It's not like we haven't been expecting this, and it was unlikely he'd last another session with the court anyway.

So we get one conservative nutjob replaced with another on the high court.

A zero-sum equation for intents and purposes.

When there has been so much suffering this weak in along the Gulf coast, I just cannot bring myself to care about his death, nor should we be distracted by this.

8. Can anything else go wrong in this fricken country?
I feel hollow.

All we need is yet another *fucktardmoronfromhellantichristpatheticpretzeldent appointee to the Supreme court.

10. Maybe it will prompt O'Connor to unresign since
they cannot confirm yet another person by Oct 3, and this way Roberts can be a replacement for Renquist, which is more or less a fair exchange... Given the time pressures and emboldened opposition (at this moment at least) it will be interesting to watch. Renquist probably served Bush ill by not resigning the same time O'Connor did because that way they would have had two nominees by now. This will complicate things. And -- by seniority -- guess who acting chief justice will be for now until a new one is confirmed? Stevens, apparently; heard it from Pete Williams on CNN.

15. Thank you!
I am really troubled by the posts minimizing the effect of Rehnquists death on our lives. If you have women you love of child bearing age, this is catastrophic and could affect more people than those affected by Bush's incompetence in the Katrina disaster. I don't want to minimize the disaster,I cry daily and have donated time and money to the relief efforts. What people don't get is that giving Bush the right to appoint two Supreme Court Justices can affect all 240 million Americans. Choice, personal privacy, gay rights, public education, the draft and the future of our children (and too many other issues) are at stake. Bottom line is that there are many people than can be MUCH WORSE than Rehnquist and if we ignore this issue and assume our Dem leaders will filibuster, we are in for a rude awakening.

17. You made me smile
I needed that.

Thanks.. :)

Unless bush manages to get Beelzebub to take the appointment (I hear he's working on it) I don't see how anyone could be a worse SCJ.

12. More negotiating power
My husband thinks this gives the democrats more leverage to bargain for one good and one bad. Being realistic, this beats two bad ones.

14. I tend to agree. The only drawback with the timing is that
the media will now be splitting their attention, which is bad.

Regardless of political bent, agreement/disagreement, etc...respects are due at this time. Anything else is just crass and low-brow.
