I would like everyone to just take a moment
One week ago--we were here watching in horror the monster Katrina encroaching on the citizens of New Orleans. Many of us stayed here until the wee hours of the morning.
Now we sit here one week later...in shock that our worst fears came true.
Please think of the humans who suffered greatly. Think of the ones whose lives were lost. Think of all of the citizens who lost everything they had.
We owe it to these people--even the ones who drove their SUV's out of town--to hold our leaders accountable.
To make sure that we don't let this story get washed out to sea.
Be diligent. Be resolute. We cannot let the death of Rehnquist push this out of the news.
We just can't.
There has to be accountability here and I pledge to do everything that I can to make sure that these people do not fall into the abyss.
Who is with me?

6. My fears weren't even as bad as what did happen.
I thought that the people left behind could drown, and that to me was terrible, but I really thought the survivors would be rescued right after the hurricane. Damn was I wrong. It seems like horror has piled on top of horror.

8. Absolutely...
I can't stand the lack of action by the govt...

It was horrible enough that people died in the hurricane, but now I seriously wonder how many people have died at the hands of a botched rescue effort?

14. I agree.
But I don't think Rhenquist's death will push the Katrina victims out of the news. Hundreds of thousands of people homeless and killed due to a catatrophic hurricane opposed to Rhenquist's death? Please.

17. A very nice post, but may I quibble about one phrase?
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 11:37 PM by Redstone
"We owe it to these people--even the ones who drove their SUV's out of town--to hold our leaders accountable."

So, should the people in New Orleans who had SUVs have stayed there instead of leaving? Did they do something wrong by leaving?

Please correct me if I'm misinterpreting this statement, but it sure sounds like you're saying that.

Listen, you know after last night that I really want to be your friend and stay friends with you, and I'm not looking to start any arguments with you. I wanted to be supportive of your very nice post, and I am, for the most part.

And I'll do everything I can to do what you're asking. But that one phrase sound kind of mean-spirited. I hope I'm misinterpreting it.

Redstone

Edited for late-night lousy spelling.

18. Me too.
I just accepted a Regional Coordinator position with MoveOn today and vowed the same thing. It feels so good to have a set of marching orders and something meaningful to sink my teeth into. This is not what I ever envisioned for myself, but these dark times require our utmost. And I vow to do exactly that.

The media is getting ready to wrap up this story - you can see it. Now that the so called "aid" has come, all will be right with the world, let's go on to the next infotainment.

It has to be kept out there, or it will become buried.
