I'm sorry for correcting the misrepresentation but that woman in the |
|
wheelchair who died at the convention center was white, the press referred to her being attended to by her relatives, but the women who desperately tried to save her were black, they were just helping another human in need..then I just heard Harry Connick jr on Larry King say he stared at her beautiful brown skin as he prayed over her....?!!;
It really doesn't matter what the color of her skin was but it shows that the those in charge cared little about the age or race or health of those left behind and abandoned.

7. what does that mean in this context? |
|
sure, the poverty cycle is hard to break. but you said that the footage indicated that this criminal negligence wasn't explicitly conceived around race or age. The implication, as I understood it, was that the poor were left behind. Poverty and race were correlated in a statistically significant way in New Orleans, more so than in much of America. This is not explicit eugenics like Nazi Germany, but leaving the poor behind does amount to an ethnic cleansing, for all intents and purposes.

I had an argument with a GOP co-worker in which I protested Condi's visiting a Broadway Comedy Club while the delta was being flooded. He said she had every right to her life. I won't talk to him again.

12. Yes but pols count on PR and perception. there was no reason for Bush to |
|
back to Washington except for PR and image. Or go out for staged photo ops. He himself being as useless as tits on a bull.
By the way, Condi was at a Broadway musical. Hot ticket. And then shopping for Ferragamos, dropped a few thou on shoes while many folks in the Gulf were doing without and more, having lost everything in the floodwaters. It's the idea of privileged members of our gov't publicly acting as if nothing particularly momentous is happening, like thousands of their fellow citizens dying. Bad form. And bad politics. Which is all they really care about.
Obviously your co-worker doesn't get it. But having been caught at it, Condi went back to DC and announced she would go to the Gulf too. WTF for? She's secty of state, what she's gonna do, sign a treaty with Mississippi? Sing spirituals with the folks in shelters to lift their spirits and show she's just folks? These people can't even adequately pretend to have a social conscience and concern for their fellow human beings.
They view the hurricane and its aftermath as a PR and political problem, not a humanitarian catastrophe. Bah!

6. Actually, I think some of them do care. |
|
I think they care about their portfolios. I think they care about getting a chance to profit from the disaster. I think they care about having cheap labor factories in the south shut down.
There are some who care about perceptions ... and appearing "humanitarian." (Those are the ones who get plenty of press coverage for their "generosity.")

10. Good point -- I've heard reports of "the dead in their wheel chairs" |
|
Which would indicate that more than one person died while in their wheel chair.

11. The woman under a blanket against the wall seemed to have a white |
|
arm, but the point is that she died under horrendous conditions while Nero fiddled and Condi laughed at Spamalot.
