We always have a week's worth of stuff on hand, but that's it. After watching NO this week, this is changing. Any major problem -- flu epidemic, extended power failure, etc. -- and it won't be enough. It is now clear that none of us can count on anyone but ourselves.

I spent most of my money on school supplies. I cant believe how expensive it is now for you children to go to school.

4. "It is not clear that none of us can count on anyone but ourselves"
Especially while the Bush administration is on vacation. August/Sept. is a bad time for tragedy to strike the US for that reason--presidential golf tee-offs stand in the way of emergency relief.

6. Agree. I'm thinking that even with our limited space
we need to stock more.

And, try to get our 'hood together. In an emergency, knowing your neighbors and having something like a phone tree -- anything -- could really help. Why wait until something happens? We know it will.

11. Sure. Partly because we know this won't be over until
these criminals are out of power. Partly, because we know people are still dying right now.

I suppose I should have said, we know this won't stop with poor New Orleans.

8. Interesting
I have tons of camping stuff but it's thrown all around. I've now got it in a duffle bag I can just grab with water stored in the truck plus canned foods and so on.

That's what I thought...if something happens it will be 'please die now'
unless of course you make over 1M a year.

10. I don't either.
I think I should get more prepared. I don't want to play the alarmist card, but in the last week I have seen how easily this country can be reduced to 3rd world status and that if something bad goes down, you're on your own. Never before could I fully fathom America being like that.

Now, I can.

12. More importantly w/gas prices things are going to up up quickly
I am single and the grocery store is literally 1 1/2 blocks from my house so I run in every other day. I have decided to do seriously monthly shopping tomorrow. Gas will drive the price of everything up really quickly. Think ahead and stock up. It will also save on gas.

13. This is something everyone should be thinking
I spoke to a friend of mine in Los Angeles and he said the same thing "If something happened it's only my gf and me".

The government doesn't care about you or anyone.

I think it'd be good to keep some food, water, batteries, flashlights, and create your own personal evacuation plan.

I keep in mind, I am lucky because I have a car and can leave in such a situation. This is the ideal republican world - Social Darwisism at its finest.
