Jefferson Parish - NO suburb
Does anyone know the status? My wife's entire family was there & we cannot contact them. The only thing I could find about it on WWL was that residents would be allowed in in about one week to get clothing & essentials & then would have to leave for at least a month.

2. I'm so sorry
I've noticed that there's very little news on N.O. suburbs even though we saw on the first day that there was massive flooding. I hope your wife's family got out safely and I hope the suburbs are getting help.

7. Yes, all in Marrero
Generally good in what way? Wind, flooding, can't really find out.

Specific streets:
Wynhaven Health Care Center
1050 Medical Court Blvd.

1717 Celtic Dr.

1564 Gaudet Dr.

46. I have heard there some some flooding in lower Marerror
Those loverly developer built levees probably didn't make it. I thought they were all fixed after the storm in '85 that parked off the coast and pushed all that water in.

Otherwise, West Jeff escaped the surge flooding, and suffered wind damage.

Much of East Jeff flooding from as yet unreported source beginning on MOnday during the storm. There was additional flooding from the 17th st. canal breech into old Metairie.

In general, inteerior parishes and areas west of the River faired better.

40. I just watched it. Just when you think you can weep no more! A huge
question that resulted after this though was the response of the Mississippi Gov, who PRAISED the NG...said that they were immediately sent millions of (? already prepared food packages)and water. Why they're preferential treatment over NOLA? And FEMA kept refusing aid! This whole thing gets more and more f-ed up. It had to have been planned.

6. When Shep Smith slammed Hannity the other night...
He mentioned the the bridge that leads from the CC went right in to Jefferson Parish if I'm not mistaken. And that beyond that bridge, there was fresh water, some electricity and something resembling civlization.

The official parish website was slow to load, so I backed off of it.

12. I just spoke to a friend yesterday with family that lived there...
and she said that they found out that their neighborhood came through pretty well and their houses weren't damaged much at all. She also noted that she thinks that there was a bit more police and fire protection in that area too than others, so it sounds like houses might be safer from looters there too, but that wouldn't stop me from going in there and getting out really important valuables if given the opportunity to do so.

31. According to a police scanner report today...
Jefferson Parish residents will be allowed to enter the area on Monday but the area will not be open to the general public for an "undetermined length time". There was a "long line of traffic" on the highway leading to Jefferson Parish today...they gave the impression that it was people trying to head back.

37. My brother had a business in West Jeff Parish
My understanding is that there was no flooding or major damage. There was some looting. His office was in the Terrytown area, across from the Oakwood Mall which was burned down by looters.

The WWLTV forums and the NOLA forums have the best info I've seen

43. Got a brief report today from Terrytown
In-laws went in today. Father-in-law a state road commission supervisor or something like that, probably got exemption to go back in, not totally clear how they got back in. They have consumable supplies, generator, etc (drove back from Houston) but gas will be difficult to obtain. Cell phone service comes and goes.

47. Jefferson Parish Locals Being Allowed to Return Home
Sept 4, 2005

NEW ORLEANS - One week after Hurricane Katrina turned the region into a disaster of biblical proportions, miles-long lines of vehicles crawled into Jefferson Parish on Monday as residents were allowed to return for brief inspections of what's left of their homes.

The traffic began moving into the parish about 6 a.m. and officials planned to allow traffic in for 12 hours, though they encouraged residents to inspect their property, pick up personal items and leave.

The suburban New Orleans parish, which has about 500,000 residents, has been closed since a mandatory evacuation just before Katrina hit. Wide portions of Metairie and Kenner suffered heavy flooding and authorities said thousands of homes were damaged.
