Hospital evacuations

Brown: I've just learned today that we ... are in the process of completing the evacuations of the hospitals, that those are going very well.


CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta: It's gruesome. I guess that is the best word for it. If you think about a hospital, for example, the morgue is in the basement, and the basement is completely flooded. So you can just imagine the scene down there. But when patients die in the hospital, there is no place to put them, so they're in the stairwells. It is one of the most unbelievable situations I've seen as a doctor, certainly as a journalist as well. There is no electricity. There is no water. There's over 200 patients still here remaining. ...We found our way in through a chopper and had to land at a landing strip and then take a boat. Dr. Matthew Bellew, Charity Hospital: We still have 200 patients in this hospital, many of them needing care that they just can't get. The conditions are such that it's very dangerous for the patients. Just about all the patients in our services had fevers. Our toilets are overflowing. They are filled with stool and urine. This time the press has found its purpose and I think many will become teeth-baring tough since they've seen the devastation firsthand.

3. I sure hope you're right

about the press. I think many of them could excuse what Shrub did to Cindy Sheehan, because the wounds she suffers aren't out there, blatant and open. I think many of them could excuse what Shrub did in Iraq because they were embedded with the troops, and didn't ever really get to see the suffering of the Iraqi people up close and personal. But now, they are talking to fellow Americans with open wounds, living in deplorable conditions and they know this suffering did not have to happen. Even Tucker Carlson had shed his smirk when he reported from NO last night.

10. they did a segment on this earlier today....the reporter actually seemed

ANGRY as he read off the facts, especially as he detailed the garbage spewed by Chertoff (WRT the 10,000 lives saved in the first three days, which he repeated--unrefuted, of course, by Russert--on MTP). only 4500 were actually saved, if that, in the first three days

I caught parts of FTN, This Week, and MTP, and nowhere was any of this brought into as stark relief as was done on CNN

but, at least it's out there

11. When I saw the interview on CNN, the MOST disturbing part ...

...was that the patients AND STAFF were evacuated from the Tulane Medical Center before "they" (read rescue officials) had rescued and transferred ill patients from Charity Hospital (across the street), much less the staff.

I'd call it classism when the insured (more likely to have $$$) at Tulane are rescued before the uninsured and indigent at Charity. FEMA and the chimp administration call it what ... ?
