IMPORTANT DONATION INFO-GOV BLANCO NEW FOUNDATION-$ GO RIGHT TO LOUISIANA
From the official website of state of Louisiana:

The Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation has been established in order to help provide immediate assistance to our citizens in need through a network of Louisiana charities, non-profit and governmental agencies, including clearinghouses like the Louisiana VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster). The Foundation is also designed to support long-term family restoration and recovery by focusing on education, housing, health care, legal assistance and jobs for Louisiana families whose lives have been altered by Hurricane Katrina.

By postal mail, please make donations payable to Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation, Inc. and mail to:

Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation, Inc.
Fed. Tax ID No. 20-3399944
c/o Division of Administration
1201 North Third Street, Suite 7-240
P.O. Box 94095
Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9095
Inquiries may be directed to: LouisianaRecovery@la.gov

http://www.katrina.louisiana.gov/donate.htm

THIS FUND IS IMPORTANT FOR TWO REASONS...

1. Relief goes right to victims
2. MONEY HELPS LOUISIANA KEEP IT'S INDEPENDENCE!!

From Washington Post:

<snip>
Behind the scenes, a power struggle emerged, as federal officials tried to wrest authority from Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D). Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans, a source within the state's emergency operations center said Saturday.

<snip>

Blanco made two moves Saturday that protected her independence from the federal government: She created a philanthropic fund for the state's victims and hired James Lee Witt, Federal Emergency Management Agency director in the Clinton administration, to advise her on the relief effort.
<snip>

Bush keeps pushing country to donate to the Red Cross. Now we know why, Red Cross is more under Government control.

PLEASE get the word of the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Fund out to all sources you can think of. Please donate. Please keep kicked.

As a liberal, I never thought I'd be defending states-rights but in this case, when the federal government fails to protect it's people, it's up to the states to do it.

18. I had already given
because I couldn't watch and wait, and then I gave again in church today.

The reading in my church today was about "love thy neighbor as thyself." I cannot call myself a person of faith unless I push myself further, another $50 to help my neighbor, my sister and brother Americans.

19. This solves my dilemma of where to donate...
My company will only match donations if we contribute thru the Cox Employees Disaster Fund. They have applied for "charitable" status, but this has not yet been approved. And I have not been able to find out exactly where the funds will be donated.

I'm not in a position to donate a huge sum of money. Because of our personal tax situation, we don't itemize deductions. But I do want to make sure that whatever I give will go to the people who need it most.

I'm concerned about *co taking over ALL operations in NO and turning it into the next playground for the rich and famous. I'm concerned that they've already given a contract to Halliburton for cleanup. (WTF - are they the ONLY company in this country qualified for this type of operation?!? I don't fuckin' think so!!!) I'm concerned that they've apparently given a contract to Blackwater for "security" services. (Why does Blackwater need to be there if we've got the military there?!?) I'm concerned that the Red Cross seems to be under FEMA's thumb. And I'm mostly concerned that the people who will most benefit from other types of contributions, and from our tax dollars, are not the ones who lost everything this week.

My check will go out tomorrow.

Can Gov. Blanco say yes to all the other countries that want to send aid without having to involve Shrub? Can she say bring your helicopters, money, buses, etc.? And can she override the decision to allow Halliburton to clean up the city?

23. Thank Goodness....this will go to the People.
I'm going to give to this right now. Red Cross will get millions but I haven't seen any photos of them in NO or Miss. And they weren't in that SuperDome ready to go...or in the Convention Center where all those folks had was nothing or some packs of MRE's.

Now if we could just get aid to those families who are now in shelters scattered all over the place. They need help finding their relatives. And what about their family members who have died? How will they get back to identify them or go to a funeral?

This is the best thing that could happen. They will employ locals and keep the $ in LA. This type of donating will have a ripple affect, because the locals will spend it in LA., businesses. I have to figure out how much I can, do with a little sacrifice!

Thanks soo much for the info.

I will donate to this group instead of the Red Cross. I fear that some of the money to the RC will end up in Halliburton's pockets, but can that happen? The RC has such close ties to the RNC, and any group that Bushco recommends we donate to is suspect.
