I Predict That Clarence Thomas Will Be Made Chief Justice.
Because of the current debacle. The ultimate irony.

1. That's what I think too
they'll play the race card - as if Thomas was actually helping African Americans.....

6. They always appoint the most incompetent person possible
Thomas would certainly qualify.

22. that's what I thought as well
they have a talent 4 find the worst possible person - then put him in charge. Thomas would certainly be, if nothing else, consistent.

Could be. I think it will be either Thomas or Scalia. I thought Scalia, but you may be right.

There's nothing to choose between them anyway.

8. You think they would snub Fat Tony like that?
Especially after all he has done for the Imperial Family to help them seize Amerika and disconnect all the burglar alarms?

Maybe, I mean maybe he would be content with being De Facto High Imperial Judge, because Slappy IS his "second vote".

But could Fat Tony stand that? As a nazi-like monster I wonder how deeply his loyalty to the Imperial Family goes. Could he withstand that, even though he'll have all the power?

In either case, it matters not, the Fat Tony/Slappy IUmperial Court seals shut whatever tiny chance Amerika had at being free again.

19. Reasonably likely.... but I doubt it.
He's too conservative and too caustic. Meanwhile the totalitarians ( Bush et al) are on the defensive. Theyre not used to being there and may tread more cautiously.

Cheney will look for someone more obscure but with impeccable credentials with all elements of their coalition.

12. don't forget
they have to be confirmed.

so if he pick someone on the court already that would be 3 hearings.

11 of 16 chief justices were appointed directly. only 4 were elevated.

so if he pick an new person only 2 hearings.

Do you think he has enough political capital for 3 hearings?

13. I dunno. I think it will be Scalia! Remember, he's Cheney's best bud!
I'm not so sure they really love Thomas very much. He's used as a show of black support, and i guess is so happy he's on the court, he'll always vote in favor of the Pub view point so he's a lock on the RW vote, but I just get the impression they don't really like him much.

20. If they had any savvy they would appoint OConner
as it would take the wind out of the image of their being out of touch and frankly, increasingly Marie Antionettish.

However - they like to WIN via POWERPLAYS - some kind of littleman syndrome thing, if you ask me, - so they let the bigger picture (repaint selves in public opinion as more moderate - to try to again be able to get "agenda" (as destable as it is) through) slip away in order to score a big "FU AMERICA - WE DO AS WE PLEASE!" - and do even more harm to the country by rending even deeper clevages/polarization.

23. No, not O'Conner. Her husband is ill -- that's why she retired.
I heard he has early Alzheimers and she wants to be with him. Can't blame her for that.

27. Things have changed dramatically
I think she might be willing to step up. I don't think the WH is smart enough to ask. But your point is correct, she can not be blamed for her choice per supporting her husband.

bench will be appointed.

It will definitely be an outsider - possibly Roberts or Gonzales.

26. Yes-Opus Dei Chief Justice
I predicted this, too ... along time ago.

Thomas lets Bush play the race card, which is now especially important because of the controversy surrounding the hurricane evacuations.

Any criticism of Thomas will be counter by call it another "high tech lynching".

Bush would go down in history as chosing the first African-American Chief Justice ... take that Thurgood Marshall!

Thomas now has plenty of experience on the court.

Thomas nominated as Chief Justice confirms daddy Bush's wisdom in picking him for the court in the first place.

It satisfies the demands of the Christofascist right. Thomas is closer to the so-called "Constitution in Exile" movement than is Scalia.

Thoma,s as an Opus Dei member, makes the conservative Catholics happy.

It gives Bush the opportunity to make another associate justice appointment -- a young, stealth nutso rightwinger to the court.

For all those reasons, I think Thomas is a more likely pick than Scalia.

30. Well he certainly has an excuse to screw Tony now doesn't he?
Can't blame it on him. It was Katrina.

Thomas is a better choice for the powers that be. He's nothing. He owns nothing, he's connected to nothing, has no particular personal agenda besides proving that he is "not like the other blacks"?

Thomas exists only to do his master's bidding. Scalia may have other agendas. That's why I think Thomas is perfect.

That way he get to play the race card twice.

And the news coverage of three confirmations will drive everything else off the news.
