My Bush-voting mother responds to my email...
IN response to my email that I am going with the Red Cross to Louisiana in a week in which I told her how worked up I was over the SNAFU's (I didn't mention anything about Bush or race), this is part of her response...

Your dad and I are not surprised whatsoever that you are worked up over this, who isn't. It's amazing how much you care about things. I am so proud of you. It is very disturbing. There is no explanation for the delays. Do you think it is because the city is predominantly black or is our readiness that bad?

repeat after me mom: Liberals are right. Liberals are right.
Compassion + Intelligence = Liberals

1. Well good that she didn't turn her brain off completely, if she is able
to recognize those obvious truths. Hopefully you can eventually help her the rest of the way.

4. I would write her back with the following
Our readiness isn't so much the issue. There were guard and services at the ready. Our problem is that the people appointed to the leadership slots at FEMA are qualified solely on the basis of who they know.

The current head of FEMA'S only qualification is that he was college roommates with Joe Albaugh, the former head of FEMA.

He was previously president of the Arabian Horse Assn and was fired for incompetence. For this he was rewarded with a cushy job as head of FEMA.

5. They gutted FEMA so they could hand out the jobs/contracts themselves.
They weren't ready to do even that when Katrina came along.

6. OMG, do we share a mother?
I know it's impossible, but my mother (life-long Republican) started turning around shortly before the last election. I'm not sure, but I suspect she voted for Kerry. But right before she started really turning from the dark side, she said to me, "It's amazing how much you care about things. I am so proud of you." I'm sure it was that exact quote, and I'm sure that's when she seemed to start showing a dramatic change of heart.

So I'm glad your family seems to be waking up. It sure makes Thanksgiving less tense. :)
