It's largely a case of ignorance. Amazingly, I love some of my conservative friends. I have some that stretch back to elementary school. It's an interesting study in human relationships and social evolution.

I think it is largly a case of not looking deeper (at least for my friends). For many it's obviously a case of justifying their own greed and bigotry (they are not my friends).
