5. damn right it is serious shit and it is just beginning now
and I don't want to hear about "proper sanitation" and "proper medical care". If you've been exposed to some sort of toxic shit that burns the skin right off of you, man oh man, this is the beginning of the end as predicted in the book "The Quest".

:scared: damn right I am :scared:

11. Oh, it's clear all right. Fucking CRYSTAL.
The problem isn't those of us reading this - the problem is everyone ELSE. It doesn't appear to be very fucking clear to the public at large from what I can see.

13. You're right and we're more powerless than I thought.
What was that Zappa quote...

"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre." (1977)

12. You may not want to hear about it, but it's the truth
Good sanitation can stop the spread of cholera, dysentary, and other fecal-oral-route infectious diseases.

However, chemical burns on the skin create a risk of necrotizing fasciitis and MRSA, both of which are really nasty scary bacteria.

17. they do not know what the toxic chemical plant had in it
and if they do know (which I am certain they do!) they aren't about to tell - I think I heard the word DIOXIN if I am not mistaken. Will proper sanitation cure this? GIMME a break PLEASE!

Wake up and smell putrid vile of New Orleans. :puke:

22. Name the chemical, it's probably in there
The Gulf Coast, because of all the oil industry that's there, is one of the nation's leading producers of chemicals.

Between what floated out of the destroyed plant, what came out of plants that were not destroyed but were in the hurricane area, and what was in the ground and leached out, you're going to find everything from vinyl chloride to mineral spirits to isocyanates.

And yeah, you're going to find some dioxins, although dioxins are a byproduct of various processes (any process that uses chlorine can and probably does generate dioxins; since dioxins are a chlorine-containing chemical, if there's no chlorine in the process there's no potential to generate dioxins) and NOT something they intend to make. I don't worry about dioxins as much as I worry about isocyanates, methyl ethyl ketone or formaldehyde because while dioxin has the potential to cause cancer sometime down the road, that other shit has the potential to kill your ass dead immediately. Ask the people in Bhopal.

Although relieved that Charles and his family made it through the killer hurricane, Mrs. Taylor said she and her husband are now worried about the unsanitary conditions in which their loved ones are having to live in the aftermath of Katrina.

"He (Charles) has chemical burns all over his body (from toxic waste in the water) and can't get medical help," she said. "We are afraid that infections are going to set in if he does not get help soon."

on edit: It's in the air too:

http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/news/nation/12555119.htm

In the distance, marring the skyline, a chemical plant burns. Toxic black smoke blots out blue sky, drifting over a city already drowning in waters swirling with chemicals, parasites, bacteria, floating debris and corpses. Everything cooking in the heat.

Plunging into it all are the rescue workers, volunteers who have trained for this moment. But no amount of training can prepare a human heart for this.

The radio crackles with a Missouri drawl. "Put you're AC on max and recycle it. That smoke's toxic," says Doug Westhoff, the team leader for Missouri Task Force 1. He doesn't have to tell anyone in the convoy to lock their doors. Some avert their eyes from the pain outside the vehicle's conditioned environment.

15. This is very much like 9-11
with all the rescue worker digging in the pit without masks are any protective equipment because the EPA said there was nothing to worry about.

16. Didn't the FEMA guy say a few days ago that he didn't think the
water was too contaminated or something to that effect? I remember thinking "but there are dead bodies in the water and broken gas lines, how can this guy think it's safe?"
