Will Flood victims be able to file for bankruptcy?

Has the new legislation taken effect yet? Isn't bankruptcy the next step for a lot of these people who have lost so much. What happens if they can't, are they just on their own and facing huge debt with no capital to get back on their feet? Seems like this will be a big issue in the near future.

4. The new draconian, inhumane

medieval laws won't take effect until October 17. But in terms of what these people are facing, that's not much time at all. It'll take months just for them to get insurance checks, if they get any at all (watch for the insurance companies to worm their way out of their obligations any way they can, the greedy fuckers). And if they've lost their cars and still have payments to make, they're shit out of luck on that.

For these people, who've lost everything and now have nothing, there should be TOTAL amnesty on ANYTHING they owe, no matter WHAT it is. If they were white and better-off, they'd probably get that automatically. But, as usual, the have-nots have to fight for every fucking right under the sun.

Anyone here who knows me at all knows my total hatred for debt collectrolls and the entire collectroll industry, including the vulture creditors who hire them in the first place. This subject has actually been on my mind this past week, how the collectrolls and creditors are going to be handling this for these people who now have nothing and have no idea when or how they'll be getting back on their feet. I wish I could be more positive, but I know that industry and how it operates inside and out, and I know the new draconian, inhumane laws that are coming down, and I don't see much hope for the victims in that regard.

Debt and bills should be the LAST thing on these people's minds, but I'm sure the collectrolls will try to change that. They don't give a damn about anything except getting their fancy commissions off the misery and misfortune of others. Not even 9/11 victims and their families got any relief from these fuckers. It makes me physically ill.

I'm going to post a thread right now offering my help to any Katrina victims as far as debt/bankruptcy is concerned. I'm a paralegal who knows those laws inside and out, and would be glad to offer any assistance I can as my way of helping, as little as it may seem.

help right now, I'll try to keep it kicked since there are so many threads now. The only problem I can foresee is how to actually communicate with any victims, since they'll likely have little or no computer access right now.

some org that has people on the ground down there? Contact the elected officials down there to make them aware of this issue? That is all I can think of right now.

I'd like to know how the credit collectors will collect from displaced people with no home, telephone, or JOB. Good luck getting blood from that turnip!
