I am in awe of the dignity of those trapped in N.O.
I've been glued to the TV for days watching this disaster unfold and the agony of those trapped in N.O. waiting for food, water, a ride out. After watching hours and hours of footage of the people who were left behind the one thing that impressed me more than anything else is how resilient and resourceful they were. I know there are reports of rapes and murders in the Superdome and Convention Center, but what I saw was many many acts of love, kindness, tenderness, of people banding together to help each other survive. Yes, many cried in frustration, but I never sensed they were scared, just exhausted.

While my heart was breaking every hour that went by and help didn't arrive, the only thing that kept me going was the courage, strength, and dignity that the vast majority of those who were trapped showed in this very frightening situation. I will never forget my anger at the way we let those people down, but I'll also never forget the strength and courage, the love and acts of kindness I saw from the victims.

1. It was amazing, wasn't it?
The vast majority of the people we saw on TV were quiet and supportive of one another. You saw elderly and disabled white people being cared for by black people.

2. Me too! They are the true heroes in all this, imo
They helped each other through this all the way, they never gave up.

3. Absolutely! REAL Heroes

They had the cameras on them when they had no new clothes, no food, no water,no home, no bathroom and still they were caring on with more dignity than I can image.

4. Unfortunately, the positive is never reported
From what I could see, the majority of people did the best they could, were very orderly considering that most of them were in fear of losing their lives, and tried to be compliant and cooperative.

But that doesn't get people to tune in to the news. So the actions of a minority have been made into the story. Not to minimize the impact of the terrible things that have been done, but for the most part, it looks like those people were decent and tried hard to do the right thing.

Those people responding to the death of the crippled woman in the wheelchair are the true face of this disaster, not the predators who are committing the rapes and assaults. Those people watching the attempts to revive that woman had real anguish and compassion on their faces.
