Just got in an argument w/my Repub mother about New Orleans, etc.
This is what you'll all be hearing from your Repub Neighbors and friends so be forwarned.

"I hope you never watch that CNN. They are just terrible - there was some woman talking just horribly about Bush and the way he handled the hurricane. She also said that no-one in Florida liked Jeb."

I told her that it wasn't just CNN and that even Faux News was criticizing him and that he and FEMA had done a horrible job. And that a lot of people did hate Jeb.

Her: "Well Bush was talking about how big that area was. Do you have any idea how large that area is?"

Me: "So that means that they shouldn't have even tried? They couldn't try to help SOME of the people in part of the area?"

Her: "They tried to get in but they got shot at."

Me: "So because there were a couple of instances of people getting shot at it was ok for them to just throw their hands up in the air and give up and let a bunch of people starve? They had about a hundred reporters running around the city and the singer Harry Connick Jr. and you're telling me that National Guardsmen with guns were too afraid to go into the city?"

Her: "It's a lot easier and safer for them to get around then people in trucks."

Me: "So you're telling me that if Harry Connick Jr. can run around there city and visit the supposedly most dangerous areas of the city - that a group of military people with guns are not capable of doing it? I guess that's why we're doing so badly in Iraq."

Her: "Well they didn't have any National Guardsmen there."

Me: "Why did they have no National Guardsmen there five days after the hurricane?"

Her: "Well it took them a while to get there."

Me: "You're telling me that it took five days for any and all of the National Guardmen to get there? I heard that they were there waiting to get in and were turned away by FEMA."

Her: "Well I heard the Governor didn't put in the right paperwork."

Me: "That's not true - he asked for the troops on the 28th. And you're telling me that because the right paperwork wan't filled out that's that's a good excuse to refuse to send National Guardsmen over there to help?"

She then ran out of excuses and hung up on me. She called back a few minutes later though - lol! She admitted that she hasn't kept up with what was really going on. I told her that I had been follwoing it closely and that she should be reading about what was going on.

3. this is why I won't discuss things with RWs
All they do is spout the talking points. There's no thinking for these people. If they considered things rationally, they'd be one of us :)

6. She also said that the people in Florida who disliked Jeb were brainwashed
I told her that I didn't recall being picked up and brought to a center for brainwashing!

I'm sure I'll be hearing more about how I'm out of control with my political views and my freeper brother will call to give me grief. Although - I always get the better of him too. All he can do is spout Rush Limbaugh talking points.

5. As hard as it is
you might of just put a crack in the defensive mechanism that allows her to keep supporting the idiot. All we can do is keep on hammering away.

If you want some good news-a life long, born and raised republican friend of ours spent a couple hours ranting about how bad * bungled everything, how he has now killed Americans in America and how he will never ever vote for another republican. I spent the time with my jaw on the floor. We have had at least 3 right wingers cussing * the last couple days. Keep hammering away and pointing out the truth.

9. The only way they'd turn on him is if their bank account gets depleted.
They are actually pro-choice and pretty liberal when it comes to social issues. It's all about the pocketbook to them. They are all also pretty bigoted - despite the fact they are pretty well-educated.

The day my diehard Republican family turns on him is that day that Republican Party is totally finished and down to a 1% approval rating.

16. Well on that one these days
I listen to them moan about gas prices, then mention heating this winter. Will cost more for fuel oil, natural gas, propane and here for electric too (energy cost adjustment). I let them moan about that for a bit them mention that everyone one in the Whitehouse used to be oil. I go into the jobs they held etc. Instead of accusing them of being the thieves they are I remind them that most people don't screw their friends so of course the WH isn't going to go after the oil companies. These are their friends and have been for decades. These people helped him get where he was. Usually more involved but that is the gist of it.

7. Hang in there! As much as we want to think this is the end for *--
die hards are not giving an inch right now. I was at a wedding last night. It was difficult to feign interest in such a non-life-threatening activity, but...as you can imagine a year of planning went into the actual ceremony and reception. I was heartened to hear that the bride and groom wanted guests to contribute to hurricane relief (they had envelopes ready) because the employer of the groom would match all donations. It took the edge off of a tough situation (how do you pretend to enjoy a wedding when so many others in the country are suffering?) But, unfortunately many at my table at the reception just simply didn't comprehend the suffering going on in New Orleans and elsewhere. I tried my level best to convey the dire conditions the New Orleans residents found themselves in, but my table mates weren't buying. I'm devastated! What kind of screwup will it take for people to FINALLY understand that *W* is a joke? In my neck of the woods, I'm the lone wolf and nobody around me backs me up. I'm blue in a VERY RED area.

8. Good job
It's also important to remember that the Iraq war took away 3000 badly needed LA National Guard and vital equipment - helicopters, high water vehicles, generators...

Bush apologists REALLY don't want to talk about that. It's their stupid war.

Paperwork - I'm just waiting for someone at FEMA to say that they couldn't send supplies because the Governor sent back the yellow copy instead of the pink one and it was on 20 lb stock instead of 24 lb.

let them eat cake!

Anyone who argues that paperwork prevented saving hundreds or even thousands of people should be taken out back and beaten severely about the face and neck with a osage stick.

15. It's just that we're putting new coversheets on all the TPS reports
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 10:55 PM by ThoughtCriminal
Yeah. It's just that we're putting new coversheets on all the TPS reports *before* they go out now. So if you could just remember to do that from now on, that'd be great. All right!

Edit:
Anyone want to guess where Dom Portwood works now?

are the ones the republicans left behind...

the elderly, the poor, minorities, the infirm, and the young.

all the one's who depend on society

we've heard them say it.. in code...
but now we see their hate in action.
And if we don't take action of our own..

11. Had a mother like that---different issue but same dense brain
Anything that wasn't "her" was wrong. She was a Lutheran pillar of the church. She hated the "Katolishers" (Catholics). Mocked them. Mocked their church service, etc. Then the Catholic Church stopped doing mass in Latin. When she heard the English version she almost shit her pants: it was the same words, litany, etc. that she was saying in the Lutheran Church (wonder if anyone ever told her that Luther was a priest)!!! So, she went to bitching about their "kneelers" until the Lutherans put in kneelers. Then they started some guitar playing masses and the Lutherans started into more of a "high church" or high mass mode. She had to change her "hate" so many times she couldn't keep track of it all. And Jews....good god, don't ever get her started on Jews........
