now is the time for a choice
In the wake of Katrina, the Republicans will lose a large swath of the working-class red voters, who *finally* can see the assholes that are the repuke part through all the reactionary bullshit

They'll go somewhere.

1. we can remake the democratic party into a true New Deal "labor" (middle class, working class, poor) party

2. we can form a third party that represents that constituency

3. we can watch millions of voters become so apathetic that they will not be a political force for generations

2. we can back off on gun control issue
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 10:50 PM by kineta
a lot of those working class red-voters are suspicious of gun control because THEY DON'T TRUST THE GOVERNMENT. it's good to keep in mind when 'courting' them.

4. Time for the NEW "New Deal" -- starting with the largest, best coordinated
... public works project in the history of the Republic focused on rebuilding NO and the Gulf Coast and NURTURING ALL the citizens harmed by Bush and his neoconster buddies (because it is them, way more than Katrina, who caused the devestation and loss of life).

Peace.

5. All right, let's begin the write up here and now.
If we're so fucking serious about this, we need to start now.

6. Back to the New Deal
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 10:51 PM by rwenos
Still the engine driving the greatest affluence ever attained by a free society. And that annoying GI Bill! The greatest social welfare program in history!

My prescription: Let's all go back and listen to FDR's "Four Freedoms" speech:

"The basic things expected by our people of their political
and economic systems are simple. They are:

"Equality of opportunity for youth and for others.
Jobs for those who can work.
Security for those who need it.
The ending of special privilege for the few.
The preservation of civil liberties for all.
The enjoyment of the fruits of scientific progress in a
wider and constantly rising standard of living.

"These are the simple, the basic things that must never be
lost sight of in the turmoil and unbelievable complexity of
our modern world. The inner and abiding strength of our
economic and political systems is dependent upon the degree
to which they fulfill these expectations."

Would GWB even understand the WORDS, let alone the sense?

7. Take back the Democratic party.
The structure is already there, we just have to take it back.

8. I don't think "remake"
is what we're in need of. However, I think that we need to show some restraint of our more eager selves and open our arms as the "party of inclusion" NOT exclusion. That, and that alone, will bring us a long way to healing the rift that the right has built out of straw.
