I saw a clip of the gun battle on the news this evening and it sounded like a pitched battle with automatic weapon fire.

On a mailing list I am on somebody suggested that the "gunmen" seemed to have had a vested interest in preventing levee repairs from happening? I find that hard to swallow, but one also has to wonder what would compel a group of men to attack rescue workers/contractors or shoot down a helicopter?

What sort of weirdness could possibly be going on there?

Via WWL Tv--a La. Homeland Security official has just said that the helicopter that crash landed in New Orleans at around 6:55 p.m. CT was a civilian helicopter, two passengers on board, minor cuts and scratches, no reports of shooting. This despite Joe Scarborough on MSNBC "reporting" that a Coast Guard "helo" had been shot down, and Geraldo Rivera on Fox saying that it was a Coast Guard chopper, identifying it by type.

There is no report by any reputable service of gunfire directed against the helicopter. Helicopter crashes are not uncommon; so many are being flown, and for so long, in that area, that it would be amazing f there were not a mishap or two.

The one that went down yesterday was a civilian craft and was definitely accidental.

There are a lot of copters in the air there and they say it is really crazy to fly. Not much for flight control I would imagine?

The first report is that it was a civilian helicopter involved in rescue operations, and the last report, that it wasn't involved in rescue operations
