It is constantly bandied about that George Bush would retain about a 30% approval rating even if he Bar-B-Qued babies on live TV and sat down to snack on the tangy morsels while spinning his latest show of gross incompetence. Full color, flat-screen, high definition.
One of the sick truths about our democracy is how few people actually participate. Overall a well contested national election held on a sunny day will bring out about 60% of the population, local elections are lucky to bring out one in five.
With those two bits of knowledge behind us it would appear that less than one fifth of the nation actually supports the chimp with blind strength of conviction. If Bush's base is 30% of the 60% of voters who show up at the polls it means that roughly 18% (0.3 x 0.6 = 0.18) of the population actually stands behind the asswipe with enough determination to leave the house for an hour. How's that for strong support?

1. And this is exactly why Repub-lite is NOT the way to go... |
|
If more people were being educated as to the truth, by the only people who 1) have access to the truth and 2) the ability to call a press conference
The Democrats have to start telling the whole truth and not worry about "offending" the syndicate that is masquerading as an administration.

3. I remember what Edwin Edwards once said. |
|
Edwin Edwards was (is? sorry) a former governor of Louisiana. He once remarked that he would only be defeated if "I were caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy".
Well, that 30% of Bush would support him even if Bush were to be found in bed with a dead girl or a live boy. Seriously. There is a absolute granite like support of Bush from a pertcentage of people.
But I like your post because it puts things in perspective. Yes, when you take into account the vast amount of people who don't vote, and using those numbers you provided, Bush actually has a rather tiny percentage of people taken as a whole.
No, that's not strong support at all.
Nice post. Thanks for putting things in perspective.

7. That was a great quote. I remember that. |

Sad, but very, very true even today. Bush is living proof of that.

14. If they don't vote, they support Bush |
|
They might say in some poll that they hate the guy, but if they don't go vote, they are complicit in supporting him. That's why you poll registered or likely voters. They're the ones who make a difference.
Should we work the people so they become likely voters? Yes, but you can play with Math all you like. The fact of the matter is that the majority of this country is liberal leaning, and a good number of them don't vote. They like and agree with the liberal ideology, but they dont' vote.
The conservatives on the other hand are much better at getting their masses to vote.
That's the big issue. If we had 90% voter participation this country would be a liberal paradise.
