7. Having industrial infrastructure |
|
to me is far more important than the patriot act and a Dept. of Homeland Security. Our nation's leaders are totally overlooking the possibility of a major war against a nation or group of nations that are our equal militarily. We've got to be able to mass produce ships, planes and tanks if need be AND keep them running, and that means more industry in the country and an end to dependence on oil and foreign oil in particular.
One more point I'd like to make - having a strong capacity to wage war does not mean having the largest standing army like republicans seem to think. So it is not hypocritical to be strong on national defense and want to cut the military budget. If the largest standing army won the war, Germany and Japan win WWII hands down and Russian wins WWI by itself.

9. As terrible as it is... |

My first thought was, "Well, my local steel mills aren't going to fold after all." The whole affected region was the "Pittsburgh of the South". Well, up here near the Pittsburgh of the North, Pittsburgh, the mills have been going under, slowly but surely, for a decade. If the U.S. is going to retain a domestic production capacity for steel, then it'll be essential to federally subsidize the local mills to get them running at full production A.S.A.P. The local factories used to produce over 50% of U.S. steel, and something like 2% of the world total. Mind you, that was fifty years ago, but the same factories are still there. All one would need to do to get them running full steam again is to restaff them with trained people, and secure supply lines for coke and ore.

Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel is making cutbacks, not enough orders in their books right now. It would take about 90 days to reopen the idle lines.

11. It can't be that hard to do it |
|
There are fucking idle mills everywhere around me. Most of the steel companies along the Ohio River are NOT running anywhere near capacity and they've shut down lines until the order books are filled. 90 days it takes to fire up a blast furnace again. The empty mills can be reopened but they're gonna have to buy new equipment. They sell off the furnaces and other materials when they go under. The buildings are still there though.
