How come Rehnquist snuffs it and the flags go half-mast?!
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 12:15 PM by HypnoToad
We had Katrina less than a week ago, likely SEVERAL THOUSAND dead... never mind the incredible loss of property which is what the neocon elite seems to care for more. The flags didn't go down.

Rehnquist, one of the infamous folk who ignored the POPULAR VOTE and other issues in Gore's favor during Selection 2000 pops off as everybody had expected some time ago and all the flags are ordered to drop like Michael Jackson's career?!

That is wrong. Where ARE the priorities?

1. don't forget, the flags are also for the victims of katrina--said so in
VERY small print, with no explanation for why it took a week to get around to them.

2. Our leaders didn't think that ANYONE died because of Katrina
I mean, they didn't even get a memo! What are they supposed to do? Watch CNN?

C'mon, governance is hard work!

3. I agree, as usual, his priorities stink
There are some who are trying to say the flag is at half staff for the NO victims but here is the proof that it isn't:

"With the flag flying at half-staff over the White House in honor of Rehnquist, Bush noted that the chief justice's death creates the second opening on the Supreme Court, following the retirement announcement in July of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor."

7. well, he *was* the Chief Justice
Whether you liked the guy or not -- I certainly didn't -- the purely ceremonial act of lowering the flag to half-mast is definitely going to take place upon the death of the number one judge in the US.

8. Another shameful display of our government
I couldn't believe it. Why were the flags still flying high! When Rehnquist died, I thought, um, now bet them flags come down! Sure 'nuf. And they added the caveot "and for the victims." Another outrage! Those flags should have been down Monday morning and not go up again until at least the last body is out of there and all are accounted for! How can we behave so shamefully!!
I sure hope all those who are so proud of how Gov has handled everything will at least see this one as a disgrace!

9. The problem is that Bush asked for it for Rehnquist first before the
victims of Katrina.

10. I think it would be cool for the flag of the City of New Orleans
to be flown by other cities throughout the nation (especially those who are sheltering evacuated NO citizens), until the day when she can stand on her own again.

Je t'aime, Nouvelle Orleans
