Bush and company CAN'T kill American democracy.
They've landed some blows. They might win a few more rounds, but they won't win the fight.

At its core, America is an idea - something people aspire to. Keep that idea alive; help people to dream that dream and America wins.

It might get messy but America has survived worse. You are a nation born through battle, divided by civil war and tested by forces from within and without. Yet you remain.

Bush can't kill America.

1. That's a very beautiful and supportive comment. I just hope
you're right. It seems to be falling into a fascist state at a rate that is positively alarming to someone who has read a bit of history.

5. You have the benefit of history to learn from
Democracy survives through vigilance and action. If you ring the alarm bells loud and long enough - people will hear.

3. Thank you, Ms. Canadian!
I love you Canadian types

I think that something people forget is that Bush* supporters aren't running around saying "I like Bush because he's going to get rid of democracy". If anything, they support him because they *believe* Bush is supporting democracy. They are misinformed/fooled about Bush, but they do not despise democracy. I read a poll somewhere that majorities of Bush supporters support progressive notions and institutions such as the UN and the Kyoto agreement. The unfortunate part was that they believed Bush supported them too.

It's not that average Republicans, even fundies, want to see democracy die. They're just fooled by Bush.

8. The only way in which I disagree with you is that many,
like the guy yelling at me in a pizzeria today, are not just misinformed but purposefully "head in the sand" not wanting to believe that their leader might be anything other than perfect. It won't be until they and their loved ones are being eaten by crocodiles that they believe it, and by then the destruction may be astounding.

11. That's your ace in the hole
Most people who supported Bush aren't bad people. You might disagree with them on certain issues, but I bet you have a lot more in common with them.

People want to be able to take care of their families, to be safe, to have choices and a bright future. They want clean water and to be able to get milk at the grocery store. They want opportunity.

You need to show them how supporting Bush hinders these things. Bush might be your unintended allie in this - the way he is imploding lately. The Bush Administration is a house of cards, shake it enough and it will fall down.

7. Oh yes he can!
Remember, the opposite of love is not hatred, it is indifference. We've all seen that from Bush during the past week. He leads by example. If he is indifferent to the suffering of others, the weak minded will emulate him. That's all one would have to do to kill America; take away the essential goodness of her people.

13. People are not indifferent about their lives
Bush has them convinced, but if the polls are to believed, their faith in him is wavering.

Convince them.

I'm sure many Bush supporters gave money to Tsunami relief and to help those devasted by Katrina. They aren't heartless. They believed Bush - make them believe otherwise.

14. Normally I would agree with you ...
But I can't get past the fact that they control the voting machinery in this country ... and they can therefore artificially erase their comeuppance.

Hate to be a pessiimist ... sorry ... :(

15. I've gotten so cynical that I still have a little hope based on the
recognition that dems have, historically, been known to cheat at the voting booth too! If they're not gonna fight the Mepublican voting scandals by demonstrating the fraud and getting even legally, I still have some hope that they can arrange to "out-cheat" the bastards!

21. And the media...
the voting machinery brought them into office. the media still have a large % of the populace believing that none of the devastation they've wrought over the last 5 years is their fault - hence the "don't blame me I voted GOP" bumper stickers.

Sadly, we're going to have to hit bottom before Rove, Limpballs, and their ilk are purged, and we're not even close yet. It would be nice if we could rescue the country with a civil war, but I don't even think that's likely any more. They will drive us into a world war, and out fate will be much the same as Germany's when THOSE good people let fascists take over.

19. What is the idea that makes America what it is?
Apart from getting that new Britney Spears album and talkin' to what's left of your coworkers about who lost at American Idol last night?

People are apathetic.

22. Yes, it is far from over
In the longer view, these last 40 years will be viewed as a last attempt by the ultra wealthy to destroy the power of "the people".

Look at the recent news with this in mind.

The European Constitution was rejected and the corporatist were sent back to the drawing board to try again. Socialism is alive an well in Europe.

The corporatist have built factories in India and China hoping to subvert those governments. They won't win there either. And the extremely poor in those countries can now look forward to hope for entering a middle class. The corporatist will see something resembling trade unions emerge there also.

Here in the 'colonies', Bu$h is just about to be flushed down the toilet of a failed neocon philosophy. The extreme RW will be right behind him. I think we can expect many politico's to change their strips shortly and a more people friendly Republican party emerge. The medium will be moving to the left somewhat.

The corporatist shot their load with Bu$h, they are just about done I would say.

Maybe this century will turn out OK, but we need to look into other ways to get and use energy. I'd say after flushing the toilet, that energy should the number 1 priority.

Don't count the USA down and out just yet. It ain't over by a long shot.
