1. They're at half-staff for ...
the chief justice that just passed away. Not the hurricane victims. Peace.

2. Jesus, has it been that long since I've been out of the house?
If they just got lowered for Rehnquist, that's fucking disgusting.

6. Wolfie...
...just asked the WH spokesperson when exactly did the flags go half staff. He also asked her to find out if they went half staff after 9/11. He said "our viewers would like to know".

7. Here is proof it was lowered for Rhenquist not the hurricane victims
"With the flag flying at half-staff over the White House in honor of Rehnquist, Bush noted that the chief justice's death creates the second opening on the Supreme Court, following the retirement announcement in July of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor."

9. Was it to "honor" Rehnquist
or a perverse way to celebrate getting another seat to open?

11. It is customary to lower the flag to half staff for notables with the
stature of the Chief Justice but the important point is that it is ALSO protocol to lower the flag for national disasters like what occurred with the hurricane. Add to that they lowered the flag to half staff immediately after 9 11 to honour the victims yet not for the hurricane victims. Interesting for sure.

10. He did...well after CJ died he remembered
US President George W. Bush has ordered flags flown at half-mast across the country as a mark of respect for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The directive, which will remain in force until sunset tomorrow, applies to US flags flown from all public buildings and military posts, as well as the White House.

It also includes US missions and military facilities overseas.

Hurricane Katrina slammed into the US Gulf coast last Monday, causing huge destruction and triggering the flooding of New Orleans.

Officials at the local, state and federal levels have said the final death toll will proabably number in the thousands.

In a separate decree late yesterday, Mr Bush issued the same order to mark the death of William Rehnquist, chief justice of the US Supreme Court, who died on Saturday at the age of 80 after a battle with throat cancer.

14. At the time of the Washington Post article, bush had only proclaimed
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 04:11 PM by Spazito
the flag lowered for the CJ. This second proclamation is ass covering, pure and simple.

Edited to add: More proof of the different treatment of the Hurricane victims and the 9 11 victims:

Bush signed a proclamation for the flags to be lowered to half staff for 9 11 For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
September 14, 2001

President Extends Order for Flags at Half-Staff
Amending Proclamation 7461, Display of the Flag at Half-Staff As a Mark of Respect for the Victims of the Incidents On Tuesday, September 11, 2001
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/09/20010914-7.html

yet he waits until September 4th to order them lowered and not until AFTER he had already ordered them lowered for the CJ. That is SIX days later.
