Why FEMA turned away help

For days after the disaster, help and volunteers of all sorts headed for New Orleans with relief supplies and expertise, only to be stopped and turned away by FEMA.

Last night, one of my friends joined our regular Sunday chat. He had just come home from New Orleans with his group of volunteer firefighters from Houston, after they had waited outside New Orleans for since Tuesday for FEMA to let them help in New Orleans, or use them somewhere else in the stricken region.

FEMA's "reason" -- they wouldn't let anyone in "until the National Guard has secured the city." The details of his experience...

<snip>

Peace.

1. I am shocked that FEMA

didn't have a 'Waiver of Liability' form ready so that they could let these people go in.

:sarcasm:

2. After not securing the city for three days. Usually the U.S government
can do two things at the same time.

3. That's not the first time we have heard that
reason.
I believe it.
There were cops and drs. from Virginia, that turned around and went home because they couldn't get clearance to get in the city.

There were many stories.

I hope this all comes out.

4. "Rescuers: Not enough resources to save all in New Orleans" - CNN
And yet there aren't enough people/teams to SAVE LIVES in New Orleans.

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/US/09/04/coastguard.rescue/index.html

from yesterday: Monday, September 5, 2005 Posted: 0145 GMT (0945 HKT)

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Time is running out for thousands of people awaiting rescue six days after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, rescuers say.

Officials say they do not have the manpower, the resources or enough time to save everyone.

"My guys are coming back and telling me, 'Sir, I went into a house, and there are three elderly people in their beds, and they're gasping, and they're dying,' " Coast Guard Capt. Bruce Jones said.

"And we got calls today, 'We need you ... to go to a place in St. Bernard Parish. It's a hospice, ... and there are 10 dead and there are 10 dying.' But those people were probably alive yesterday or the day before."

Though pilots, rescue crew members and maintenance workers are red-eyed and exhausted, they're refusing to rest, CNN's Karl Penhaul reported.

For every person plucked from the flood, there are hundreds still waiting, rescuers say

Please keep a copy of these key articles for your files -- you may need references for letters to Congressional Reps & Senators and Newspapers.

I believe a special prosecutor needs to be appointed.

6. Didn't those National Guard types ever think of having a couple of guys
ride shotgun with the rescue workers, just in case?

Note that none of the possibly hundreds of MSM reporters had any trouble getting in or out of the city, nor were any attacked, as far as I know.
