All these celebrities, politicians and the like should leave them alone. They are traumatized and need material aid (which each of these people can do without the photo-op).
Imagine you are displaced to a cot in a giant gym-like structure. Everything gone, no privacy, no control over your life. Do you really want people touring your living quarters?
Sorry, not even Opra or Clinton or Sean Connery would be welcome visitors to me at that point.

For all the people slagging her for whatever reason--she has 20+ million viewers a day, and I think that number is just the US.
She's going to be FAR better received by those people than Bush was anywhere, and I'd be glad to see that if they show it.
That's way more than watch some of these cable news shows. I think Bill O'Reilly was pulling down a million or two?
I just hope she says the right thing tomorrow, that's all. If she says one even mildly conciliatory thing, some on DU will be calling for her to resign. Woops, she's not a politician. Calling for a boycott of her sponsors or some ridiculousness like that.

|
- really wants to help these people they would open their checkbooks and make donations, begin foundations for the education of the children who have lost their parents, rebuilt homes for the elderly, etc.
I'm sorry, no matter who the celeb is - unless they have medical training or are trained as an EMT or in rescue work - they need to be out of LA, MS and AL and do their charitable "work" with their wallets.
I know damn good and well I would not want my one opportunity to meet any of these people while wearing someone's hand-me-down clothes, smelling like a sewer and my haven't washed my hair in a week.

I don't think some understand the impact that Oprah Winfrey has on the women in this country.
Oprah is the probably the only celeb that should be allowed in there. Whatever she tells the soccer moms to do, they will do.
She is no doubt, NO doubt writing a substantial check, but she will also persuade others to do so.
One day, she probably should run for some kind of office.

she just may give them the will to go on. She may offer hope and comfort. She isn't in LA, MS or Al, she is in Texas.
You don't know what she is doing with her checkbook, foundations, grants or anything else. In fact you know nothing about it.
Also I do believe all of the people are taking showers and have clean clothes. But even if they don't, it doesn't matter, maybe some aren't so shallow.

I've spent a total of 3 days of my life in emergency shelter and under far better conditions than these people. You have other things on your mind.
People like Oprah have no problem getting tv time for fund raising. What is the point of going to the shelters? Is mystery who is there or what they have been through? If it helps ONE person...what if the one who is excited equals three who feel more stress? This is their home right now and they have no control over it. Many have been days on roofs or in that hell that was the superdome---maybe it isn't vanity that might want them to be left in peace but fatigue. I can't imagine what having the children constantly over stimulated by visits might do to an exhausted parent.
But, what the hell, I'm sure Dr. Phil gave *someone* hope and comfort as well so bring 'em all on. Make it just like a zoo. Tours for everyone with enough pull to demand one.

did you see some of those shell shocked-looking people with Dr. Phil? For God's sake, she's a celebrity not a counselor or minister or doctor. These people have enough visibility to call for donations in commercials they pay for after they donate---do they need to be *seen* with these poor brutalized souls?
At best these people are in borrowed clothes, finally showered and finally fed. Their physical, mental and emotional condition is likely fragile and they need rest not a damn circus even if it is Opra.
Send in doctors, nurses, counselors, priests or social workers---that will bring back hope. Why on earth would a celebrity??

59. Most Americans see Oprah as an "important" person |
|
like it or not, when an "important" person takes the time to visit and give comfort to those that feel forgotten (and worthless in their government's eyes) it IS good therapy. It makes THEM feel important by extension. I've seen it a hundred times when I worked for Disney; celebrities would meet with children from the "make a wish" foundation. The kids may have been terminally ill, but their eyes lit up when a famous person gave them personal attention. Like most on this board, the culture of celebrity in this country is a bit sickening to me; but I won't deny it's power. If celebrities put their energies into the right endeavors, a great deal of good can be accomplished.

Americans love Oprah, and she has a huge bank account, true. But she has another asset: seemingly infinite charisma. Not fake charisma; charisma that just seems to exude from her. I think by her simple act of showing up in Houston and being among the people there will do a lot of good. She is rich, she has money, blah blah blah. But she has a lot of class, and I thin she is a genuinely good person.
