Is New Orleans one more step toward instituting a military draft?
The republican party's 25-year war against the federal government has the stated purpose of rendering the federal government ineffective...except the military. Albaugh and Brown were put in charge of FEMA to destroy it (much as Bolton has been sent to the UN to destroy it). After FEMA's feeble performance, Americans this week were left to cry out for help from the military. They are our only saviors, we are told.

With the obvious lack of manpower to cover both foreign invasions and true national security, we on the left say we need to end the wars. It won't be long before the right will be calling instead for a greatly enlarged role for the military in our society. It will require a lot more bodies than they have right now. The draft will be their solution.

2. Yes, I noticed that all civilian aid..
.. was rejected. Only the military was allowed to enter and render aid. I think that's so that Bushco can control the operations and the propaganda... and make Bush look like the commander and savior of NOLA.

As for FEMA and its obstructionism, I have no words to describe the shame and disgrace.

It's just unconscionable.

3. The draft is still one terrorist attack away from being reinstated
They need a perceived enemy for the nation to rally against. Mother Nature ain't gonna do it, but the hurricane will have an effect of softening up our view of our vulnerability.

4. No, but I'll bet the recruiters are already circling around the evacuees
"How'd you like to go to Iraq, son? It's nice and dry over there..."

5. Oh, no, it'll be MUCH worse than that...
They'll lie through their teeth and promise them that they WON'T be going to Iraq. That they'll be fed, clothed, and given an education/trade. That they'll be self-sufficient. Once they signup, though, they'll ship them straight to Iraq. Guaranteed.
