Responding to "well, they were told to leave"
We've all heard this one. Essentially what it means is that the hapless victims of this catastrophe deserved what they got because they were told to leave and "chose" not to.

There are many answers to this one (wringing the neck of the person saying it is always my first thought but I try to control that) but it occurs to me that sometimes it's better to argue with freeper idiots using their own words and logic. Actual reasoning doesn't seem to go far.

So I'm thinking maybe the best answer is to simply throw their own idiocy back at them. Bush himself made the inane statement that no one could have foreseen that the levees would break. We know this is pure bullshit but to the faithful, what he says is gospel.

So if no one could have known the levees would break, how is it the victims' fault for not leaving?

Sit back, watch heads spin.

1. This is probably the best response, just because it gets people thinking.
Just saying 'but they couldn't leave!' seems to do nothing to people brainwashed into not having compassion for anyone who isn't at least as well off as them.

2. That's pretty good. Also point out that part of a regular hurricane
contingency plan is to EXPECT that about 20% of the population will not evacuate, either by choice or lack of mobility. That's the way it always has been. So add to that the number of elderly and poor in NO, and the numbers of those who did not evacuate was NOT unexpected.

4. my repub neighbor said "leave means leave" to me on
Monday after the water was rising. I know she is very devoted to her kids so I put it this way. "Some of the people couldn't leave because they were old or sick and some didn't have the money or a car. And even if they had a car it is possible that not everyone in their family could fit in it - who would you leave behind?" She said "I hadn't thought of it like that".

6. you prefer the head explosion technique. I prefer sarcasm
My (for now) preferred response goes something like this:

Oh hell yeah they should have left! I mean, it was obvious from watching cable news channels that a storm was going to destroy their real estate investment! They should have piled into their SUV's, filled the tank with no less than $60 worth of gas and driven out of the city. Come on! How much effort does it really take to drive to a Ramada on the outskirts of Shreveport and stay there for a few weeks? They can always charge it on their Platinum Visa, right? (insert a 30 second blank stare here) Maybe they'll have to stay longer, but they could always dip into their investment accounts or drive to their vacation home. (insert a sigh and an obligatory eye roll here)

;)

8. Well, that's a fun response
However, I find most of these morans don't really get it. That's why I try to use very small words and connect them to idiotic talking points that they're already familiar with.

9. Response to "they were told to take water with them"
Were they supposed to carry a 5- or 6-day supply of food and water for their whole families?

10. As I recall, they were instructed not to bring hardly anything with them..
bedding and a very few provisions, so as not to take up too much room and so they could get through "security" faster.
