3. Lou Dobbs is a bastard! |
|
Jesse Jackson is explaining why the Mayor couldn't evacuate the 20% and Dobbs is intent on putting the blame on him none the less.

Jesse can take care of himself. Jesse has been kicking ass. Lou Dobbs is no match for him.

9. He is agreeing with him on a number of things, but asking why |
|
he's insisting on bringing race into the situation.
I'm sure lots of you here on DU won't like me for saying this, but I don't think it's a racial thing either. I think it's a rich/poor situation. I realize that most of the people I saw in the coverage were black, but NOT ALL! There were quite a few who were old, disabled, sick, or whatever reason, poor and didn't have the means or method to leave NO before the storm hit.
I hate to blame the Mayor or the Gov. but somebody is responsible for planning for evacuation in the event of an emergency! Kinda like when we all had to do fire drills when we were in school. I realize how difficult it would be to evacuate all the poor who have no cars, but China evacuated 750,000 people in 2 days! If they can do it, why can't we???
There's lots of blame to pass around in this case!

10. If you look at the demographics on those under the poverty level |
|
it is overwhelmingly black so I don't think you can necessarily separate class issues from race issues. Racism, by it's very nature, is practiced by disallowing those who are being discriminated against from being 'equal' whether it be in housing, job opportunities, etc. which then keeps those discriminated against in poverty which in turn raises the class issue.

11. I was getting pissed at Lou but I really really think he's a great asset |
|
in what's to come. And after listening to him on the race issue, I think I'm beginning to understand what he means. I think he means that we weren't saying, "Get those black people OUT!" We were saying, "Get those PEOPLE out!" I really think he thinks (and I agree with him to SOME extent) that race and class are very difficult to separate in this instance.
Also, there are a lot of white people in MS that have also been abandoned by "our" government. I do think race is *a* factor, ESPECIALLY in the media coverage, and ESPECIALLY by Faux; however, I think what Lou is trying to say is that the government fuckup goes WAY beyond racism...that it's a fundamental failure.
And I have a problem w/him wanting so adamantly to assign equal blame; however, he could be on our side and very valuable to serious change. He did say that there will be hearings and accountability and that he would like to be talking to Jesse Jackson about this clusterf***k "every night."
I honestly think we need to give Lou a bit of a break.
