Email reply to friend who evacuated from New Orleans |

...im outraged by this failure at every level of govt, outraged how half the ppl in this country are still clueless as to the magnitude of the damage just sustained to this country and the southeast in particular...outraged by a fed govt that send bombs to iraq, but can't drop food and water to its own ppl...
this brings to the surface many ugly truths about america, how we have no national healthcare, a few million ppl just lost everything...and we have a permanent underclass that has no voice, no power and is literally left behind.
i read a BBC article that was very eye opening...how katrina has poked a hole in the idea of the united states being 50 states moving in harmony towards some positive future...and how US national politics resemble more, in all its ideological violence and poison, 19th century european politics...that led to WWI, how could this govt abandon americans in america?
im sad, so sad to see new orleans in such a undignified state...although i have never been there, i have studied its history and unique culture, will it ever be the same?
so many questions, so little answers...do the selfish/greedy repubs have the stomach and/or vision for what is going to have to be the largest national rebuilding and public works projects since the great depression?
even such a person as david brooks in the NYTimes said leaving those poor people stranded in new orleans is the moral equivalent of leaving wounded on the battlefield...i agree
i hope you are well josh, you and the entire region and city are in my thoughts and have been for the past week.
peace

...point well taken. but i'd be lying to you if i didn't tell you how hosed i am at both sides - because all of congress bit on this war bullshit, and it takes a vote of congress for any budgetary finagling, which, while proposed by our REPTILIAN president, they said yes to - leaving my city victim to substandard levee construction, which we have been worried about since Hurricane fucking Camille. I have lost faith in our government entirely, ENTIRELY. I am glad to see Al at least putting his money where his mouth is, and bailing out the ones that really need it.
take care, keep making music - it's the best way to fight for guys such as we are.
