78. We mustn't overlook others who tell it like it is
I wholeheartedly second your opinion of Keith Olbermann, whose "Countdown" show is a terrific source of news and calm analysis, rather than the typical talking points shouting match. But we must be sure to recognize all those MSM reporters and anchors who seem to have their eyes open and are willing to say things that might displease corporate owners and administration officials.

A case in point, quoted from CrooksAndLiars.com. Bob Schieffer wrapped up "Face The Nation" on Sunday with the following commentary:

"Finally, a personal thought. We have come through what may have been one of the worst weeks in America's history, a week in which government at every level failed the people it was created to serve. There is no purpose for government except to improve the lives of its citizens. Yet as scenes of horror that seemed to be coming from some Third World country flashed before us, official Washington was like a dog watching television. It saw the lights and images, but did not seem to comprehend their meaning or see any link to reality. As the floodwaters rose, local officials in New Orleans ordered the city evacuated. They might as well have told their citizens to fly to the moon. How do you evacuate when you don't have a car? No hint of intelligent design in any of this. This was just survival of the richest."

For many of this country's citizens, the mantra has been — as we were taught in Social Studies it should always be — whether or not I voted for this President — he is still my President. I suspect anybody who had to give him that benefit of the doubt stopped doing so last week. I suspect a lot of his supporters, looking ahead to '08, are wondering how they can distance themselves from the two words which will define his government — our government — "New Orleans."

For him, it is a shame — in all senses of the word. A few changes of pronouns in there, and he might not have looked so much like a 21st Century Marie Antoinette. All that was needed was just a quick "I'm not satisfied with my government's response." Instead of hiding behind phrases like "no one could have forseen," had he only remembered Winston Churchill's quote from the 1930's. "The responsibility," of government, Churchill told the British Parliament "for the public safety is absolute and requires no mandate. It is in fact, the prime object for which governments come into existence."

In forgetting that, the current administration did not merely damage itself — it damaged our confidence in our ability to rely on whoever is in the White House.

The "city" of Louisiana (Keith Olbermann)

SECAUCUS — Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff said it all, starting his news briefing Saturday afternoon: "Louisiana is a city that is largely underwater..."

<snip>

Well there's your problem right there.

If ever a slip-of-the-tongue defined a government's response to a crisis, this was it.

38. Why should the resignation word be used sparingly?
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 08:23 PM by blue neen
It should be shouted from the rooftops of every home in America. It should be shouted from the rooftops of every shelter that is now someone's home in America.

RESIGN, you bastard. RESIGN. Show courage for once in your worthless life and do the right thing. RESIGN BUSH, RESIGN!

It should be shouted from every helicopter hovering over New Orleans, still trying to rescue people. It should be shouted from the boats making their way through the putrid waters, still looking for survivors.

It should be SHOUTED BY EVERY DU'ER ON THIS FORUM!

Pass it around.

country needs to congregate on street corners with candle and stand and NOT SAY A WORD. They need to stand in the tens of thousands or walk in the tens of thousands and be TOTALLY SILENT. That would bring something good out of this debacle. Do a Ghandi. Do it en masse and silently.

He implied it in some of his final sentences during the broadcast,

"In forgetting that, the current administration did not merely damage itself — it damaged our confidence in our ability to rely on whoever is in the White House."

also mentioned how no one was in the white house, at the start of disaster and what our "leaders" meant.

71. There's no "throwing in the towel" line. Whitewash?
No call for impeachment or resignation in either transcript or tape, though it is still a strong condemnation of Bush.

80. Your post is wrong and misleading
Keith Olbermann DID NOT CALL for resignation - he didn't imply it didn't even come close. I have read the blog and seen the video and you are flat out wrong and shouldn't post something like this - I have to tell you I'm a little pissed that you did this.

And also a little worried that many DUers emailed him and thanked him for calling for the freak in chief's resignation. Please be more careful with your posts

81. You can email your messages of support to Keith Olberman
at this email address:

KOlbermann@msnbc.com

I've already emailed to thank him and to ask him to continue telling the truth against the inevitable Bushco spin.

82. This is untrue
and people should not be misled by this OP.

Olbermann gave a very impassioned condemnation of Bush.

He did not call for his resignation nor for his impeachment.

He may very well, in the future, but I think this post is irresponsible and misleading.

It did not happen.

87. Yes. While I agree with the general sentiment,
it needs to be said...Keith did not call for impeachment or resignation. So please don't email him thanking him for specifically calling for it.

He did deliver a wholesale vote of no confidence in the administration. But he did not use the words "impeachment" or "resignation" or any variations thereof. Which is actually kind of surprising, given that he's asked people like Scott McClellan, and Karl Rove, to resign in the past.

For whatever reason, though, he didn't say that about Bush, this time.

But his expression said almost as much.

89. Here is some of his exact words-
"I wonder which "we" he thinks he's speaking for on this point. Perhaps it's the administration, although we still don't know where some of them are. Anybody seen the Vice President lately? The man whose message this time last year was, 'I'll Protect You, The Other Guy Will Let You Die'?

I don't know which 'we' Mr. Bush meant.
"

"as we were taught in Social Studies it should always be — whether or not I voted for this President — he is still my President. I suspect anybody who had to give him that benefit of the doubt stopped doing so last week."

"In forgetting that, the current administration did not merely damage itself — it damaged our confidence in our ability to rely on whoever is in the White House."

He said this a bit more on the air than what was on his blog IMO, that basically captured the same thing.

don't think he called for a resignation, and I hate that people are writing thanking him for that if that's not what he meant.

96. Its called "inferential" response. He did not have to use the words resign
on the air to get the same message across, which was basically, Bush no-one has confidence in you anymore.

Other then that the title can be changed but I can't do it.

Granted, he might as well have. But he didn't specifically say that. Would you mind editing the title of your post? It is a bit misleading.

Keith only inferred that he has very little confidence in Bush. Didn't say he should resign.
