Read "Rivers of Blood, Years of Darkness" if you really want to know. This was actually a much more evil kind of thing, in its way. These people did nothing to deserve what happened to them, they were just in the way.

refused to believe he needed help, but about day three he saw the light and the troops arrived within hours. My apartment building was behind the National Guard off Federal Avenue in W. Los Angeles. We were able to watch them from our bedroom window deploying. I no longer lived in Los Angeles after the Rodney King incident so I don't know really what happened there first hand.
On edit. Sorry a memory lapse here. In the first riot politicians who could have done something were on vacation or out of town somewhere, but I can't remember if it was the mayor or the governor.
