Something I'm wondering with New Orleans
I keep hearing how there are people who are refusing to leave. I'm wondering: is that true? Is there proof they are refusing to leave or are people not letting them leave? What is the real story?

2. Let's put this in perspective
NO is a city of roughly a half million people. The metro area is over a million. With this many people, the Law of Averages would dictate that some people will stay behind. I expected this.

There are only a few major routes out of the city.

Many people there are poor (very high poverty rate). Many don't own cars.

There are many who are handicapped, have small children, and are elderly. Tough to just walk out of town under those circumstances.

And for many of these people, where do they go once they leave town?

And think of the many small business owners there. I'm sure they didn't want to walk away from everything they worked their whole lives for.

And above all, it would be an almost impossible task to clear out this many people with only 1-2 days notice. I would think this to be impossible.

3. If you leave, will they demolish your house in your absence?
People may be worried about eminent domain, the federal government taking possession of the land, clearing the houses, etc. If people have survived this long, I can understand some of them wanting to stay -- especially when the alternative is a sports arena in who knows which city or for how long.

4. That was one of my thoughts...
...in an earlier thread, some said that the Feds can declare eminent domain once they have evacuated an area...

My question is this: can the Feds claim eminent domain if there are holdouts (i.e., is there some sort of proportionality of evacuation required - or must it be complete)?

Keep in mind that I do not know if the earlier post was true, and that the Feds have such power. Frankly, I do not doubt it; but then I find myself cynical these days. :-(

9. Once the "story" has died down a bit.. no more rescues
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 02:01 AM by SoCalDem
the media will lose interest. It's not riveting TV to watch cranes dropping sand into a lake..the soldiers will move in and forcibly remove them..with NO embedded journalists to record it.. What's a few more bodies..

That;s why we may never get a true body count..The relatives of these poor people are scattered all over the place, and the numbers will be HUGE, so it's like the Iraqi body count.. nobody's business:(

7. Watched many today on wwltv.com...
Some people have no water damage, and have food supplies... Some have pets that aren't allowed to be brought with them, so they won't leave without them.

But I have also heard many stories of people who were trapped, were trying to walk out and when they attempted to walk out on foot, were stopped by NG... These stories were confirmed by FoxNews (of all people) and even Mayor Nagin. So there's both...
