Israeli divers volunteer to recover bodies
"It what appears almost like science fiction, Israeli volunteer divers are heading to New Orleans to help look for bodies in flooded homes.

The divers are expected to sift through the murky waters with powerful underwater flashlights. US officials believe there may be hundreds or even thousands of dead bodies still trapped in houses. There is fear that the remains will also be found in the streets as the waters recede.

They are part of a private delegation of Israeli volunteers who have extensive experience in rescues and complex emergencies garnered from work around the world.

The delegation is being coordinated by IsraAID (the Israel Forum for International Aid), a non-governmental group funded by donations mainly from American Jews. Gal Lousky, the head of the delegation, said it expects to depart Tuesday and has all the permits necessary."

The offers are pouring in from around the world. What horrible jobs these people face.

2. Ewwwwwww.
Bad source.

But good of them to volunteer!

I do not envy them the task, but I thank all who are willing to help.

11. As a diver, that's sure not a job I'd want to do.

:puke: I mean, I do know how to clear vomit from my regulator ... but I sure don't want to do it, especially more than once.

6. In the parlance of Emergency Service
this is a CAT 4 disaster, we as a nation lack the resources. Don't worry I epxlained this to folks IN GOVERNMENT last week.

8. I think we are.
I am not sure, but I thought I read that the US is also using special divers. The ones coming from Israel are specially trained for these type of conditions and have done this, sadly, several times before.

We will have 500 families from New Orleans arriving this week. We need to feed them, clothe them, get them (semi-) permanent housing, get them job, get their kids in chool.

Posting on fora isn't enough.

9. Our divers must have been sent to Iraq, too. I find it quite amazing
that it takes news reporters and anchors to for example, say "why don't they bring in food and water with the choppers". Next day, we see food and water being dumped from choppers.
My brain is overloaded now, but there were other such examples...I noticed.
Maybe, now it will "occur" to FEMA, that they had such plans after all, it just takes time to bring them in perhaps?

They just don't want to mingle with the snakes and crocs and possible germs in the water.

:sarcasm:

10. I don't care if Captain Nemo volunteers. Everyone who can help
and allay some family's mind about where the body of a loved on is, they are welcome. Thank you, Israeli divers. God bless and save you in the awful days ahead.

12. The EPA has divers trained in use of the special gear required for this
sort of diving. So does the military. So do many large (and some not-so-large) US police departments, including New York and Miami. I guess it's just not a time-priority and they'll just wait to see who's there when all the water drains down the plughole...

13. We don't have enough divers
wrap your head around this number, 10,000 body recoveries as an extremely conservative number.

Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 07:47 AM by DoYouEverWonder
and I bet with Honore running the show, the water will down a lot faster then 8 weeks. It's already gone in some places.

BTW: What do you think of Gen Honore? I get the feeling he's one of the good guys? I much rather have the NG in control instead of HS?FEMA, that's for sure.

20. Gee thanks
I was the Coast Guard acting diving officer in charge of the body recovery detail after the charter plane crash in Lake Ponchartrain on January 1, 1968.

We could use your help--

25. Went there for vacations after I got out of the CG
Love the place - a lot of wonderful memories (also a lot of not so wonderful memories about some of the kids injured/killed in water skiing accidents - Coast Guard worked with local medical examiner and sheriff on those cases).

I will be working at a shelter here in CA for New Orleanians who are now "Californians by Act of God."

The SF Bay Area has a unique quirkiness like NOLA had - just a uniquely different quirkiness.

16. not fun. that water is dangerous
GMA took water samples in NO. The scientist said there were toxic levels of sewage and a lot of human waste in there. The water glowed brightly under a black light. The doctor is highly concerned about the long term effects this contamination will have on the kids. :(

If the Isreali divers go in, may they all be safe.
