"Workers with the SPCA of Texas and the Humane Society of the United States arrived Wednesday in Louisiana, where state officials set up a temporary shelter between Baton Rouge and New Orleans for their animal rescue work.

The well-established organizations are working in cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Their joint effort has placed more than 300 rescued pets in adoption programs with various south Texas-based animal welfare groups, including the Houston SPCA, officials said.

For information about tax-deductible donations, call (888) ANIMALS, ext. 128.

For updates on the project's progress or other information, visit www.spca.org.

Alley Cat Allies

The national feral-cat rescue program Alley Cat Allies has set up the Compassion Fund, with 100 percent of donations going directly to on-the-ground rescue, program manager Vanessa Jackson said.

For information, call Jackson at (240) 482-1980, ext. 125, or (240) 482-1997, or send an e-mail to alleycat@alleycat.org. Tax-deductible donations, marked Compassion Fund, may be sent to Alley Cat Allies, 7920 Norfolk Ave., Suite 600, Bethesda, MD 20814-2525.

Alley Cat Allies' Web site, at www.alleycat.org
includes information on donating pet food and other supplies.

Best Friends

A nonprofit group called Best Friends has set up a fund from which donations will be sent directly to local shelters in the flood areas. Sponsors in the area are underwriting administrative and travel costs. For more information, visit www.bestfriends.org.

Noah's Wish

California-based Noah's Wish has listed needed donations and updates on its rescue work in the affected area at its Web site, www.noahswish.com "
