Just a thought about the upcoming 9/11 anniversary... |
|
Is the Hurricane Katrina disaster worst than 9/11?

1. How Do You Compare Disaster? They're Both Bad |
|
We still have no idea how this is going to play out. There are still some very dark days...first the final clearing of the city, then the taking out of the bodies, the bio nightmare and so on.
This disaster will be the worst natural/manmade disaster...unlike 9/11 that was a crime of commission, this is a crime of omission.

2. In terms of damage, I'd say yes. |
|
Even though according to Livia Bush, everyone's living large in the shelters, I think the worst is yet to come. The environmental/toxicity after-effects? Oy, I shudder to think about it.
NYC was able to continue functioning at about 80-90 % after the WTC came down, though mentally/emotionally we were in bad shape. But it certainly wasn't as hard off as NOLA.

5. As far as I know, Rummy is going ahead with his 9/11 parade, too |
|
I haven't seen any notice about its cancellation.
Can you imagine if a huge parade was scheduled next year to mark the anniversary of Katrina? About as appropriate as marking the 9/11 anniversary with a parade.

6. You know, I'll bet they try hard not to give any kind of death count |
|
at least not accurate prior to 9/11 because the Bushies* don't want to surpass the infamous 3000 dead to terror. Yes, I AM that cynical.

but we can come up with a close estimate of survival & deathetc. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4208070.stmThose who have access to the internet within the affected area are posting blog entries and photographs, and sites like Craigslist are being used to help people locate relatives.
<snip>
We can see this in the way the net is being used to help those affected find out what has happened to their homes and neighbourhoods, and the imaginative way they are using new web-based mapping tools to do this.
<snip> The people of New Orleans want more, and it seems to have passed to the web community to provide the sort of detailed information that they are after.
For example Kathryn Cramer, a blogger from New York state, has pulled together a selection of before and after images which show details of the damage, while another blogger, Tim Holtt, has built his page so that moving a mouse over each image swaps between "before" and "after".
<snip> This is not just a frivolous use of new toys by geeks with too much time on their hands. These experiments can help people find out whether their house is under water, which streets are accessible and what has happened to their neighbourhood.
The map at http://www.Scipionus.com is probably the best example, but there are many more.

7. Much larger area is affected, too |
|
City blocks were destroyed in New York City, and the Pentagon suffered serious damage on one side, and a field in Shanksville, but that'e the extent of the area affected.
Although it would be months before anyone felt normal again, business and everyday life did go on, quickly.
The economic effect from Katrina could most certainly be worse. The death count will almost certainly be worse.

8. They're both major tragedies. However 9/11, besides just killing thousands |
|
, allowed the NEOCONS to impose their agenda - an agenda that is in many ways responsible for the failure in New Orleans. Both will have long term effects. New Orleans will almost certainly be the genesis for a New Progressive Era. If it doesn't, this country has totally lost its moral anchor.

11. Yes-I think so and my husband & I both lost 5 friends on 9/11 at the WTC |
|
The fact that I believe its worse doesn't mean that this in any way means our friends senseless deaths were irrelevant. But the reality is that the disaster of Hurricane Katrina and the numbers of dead is not only worse in terms of the numbers of dead (when the final count is in, I believe the #'s of dead will be 2-3 times more dead than on 9/11) but it will be proven that 80% of the dead in New Orleans etc. could have been prevented alone had there been immediate rescue operations delivering water, food, medicine etc. Also, while no one can prevent a hurricane, they (the Feds, the gov't etc.) have known that the threat of hurricanes exceeding CAT3 existed, they knew that the levees were at risk etc.
So, yes, as the anniversary of my dead friends from 9/11 approaches and we light a candle for our dead friends who died 4 years ago, I also will light a candle for the dead of New Orleans and I believe that both are awful events in our nation's history on BUSH's WATCH and I believe that Hurricane Katrina and what the Bush Administration did to the City of New Orleans etc. is my generations "Trail of Tears"....

12. Don't know if it's worse |
|
But unlike 911, needless deaths are happening in excruciating slooow motion.
While Bush was chirping about Trent Lott's swinging new pad-to-be, people were dying.
While Bush was exacting petty revenge by snubbing Blanco, people were dying.
While Michael Brown was discovering he was the last person in the US to learn there were evacuees at the Convention Center, people were dying.
People are still dying.

What with the uprising and all and natural holocausts, Rumsfeld would be lynched, he wouldn't want to lose his job or anything!
