DC's 10- bus caravan returns with ONE evacuee
D.C. Convoy Headed Home
Updated: Tuesday, Sep. 6, 2005 - 12:07 PM

WASHINGTON - One Hurricane Katrina evacuee from Alabama is returning with a caravan of D.C. buses that headed south to help with relief efforts.

More evacuees, the first of two waves, arrived at Dulles International Airport just before noon Tuesday.

The convoy, which tried unsuccessfully to pick up evacuees in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., is now on its way home. It's expected the group will be back Wednesday morning.

While in New Orleans, the group did pick up four evacuees along the road and took them 30 miles from the Big Easy to a Red Cross staging area.

Frustrations with the coordination of the relief effort led to two of the 10 bus drivers quitting on Sunday. A third bus driver could not be found Tuesday. The convoy left that driver's bus behind when it headed home.

To be fair, they DID drop off fuel and supplies while they were there...

2. I know many of the northern towns want to help but...
..many of the people in the Gulf Coast may not want to leave their area. I know if my area suffered a natural disaster (I live in the Philly Metro region), I would be hardpressed to want to be relocated to the South or Gulf Region since I've pretty much spent my entire life in Harrisburg/Philly region

I know DC's heart is in the right place but these people have suffered through so much drama right now

3. Ever spent a week without power in the steamy South
without ice, without a decent meal, and surrounded by debris? Believe me, you'd want to leave (I did-and I wasn't surrounded by sewage and corpses)!

No doubt the caravan got NO help from FEMA-they were probably turned away.
