My mild mannered Art Director of 12 years...
I just got off the phone with "John", my quiet, stick-to-business, never -speak-about-religion-or-politics, don't-rock-the-boat Art Director from Disney-and man, was he PISSED! I mentioned that a job that he sent me a few days ago would be finished today, and he just UNLOADED; "You've got to get out of Florida! Look at what happened with Katrina! BUSH TOOK FUNDING FROM THE LEVEES! All those people DIED because he sent our resources to Iraq instead-AND FOR WHAT??? WHAT do we get from THAT?? More DEATH? How many have died?? Oil?? Look at gas prices-we're getting NOTHING from the Iraq war!!! This President is a DISASTER!!! I just look at the people I know who voted for that guy in 2004 and I have to say "YOU OWN THIS"!!

Wow. Just wow. Maybe they WILL wake up this time!

36. Sent this to my congresspeople this afternoon, similar letter to
each one, with changes to each as appropriate. I am not including my earlier letter to them here, but they all got it again.

6 September 2005

Sir

I just read the press release of September 1, 2005 from Senator Martinez’ office and was surprised by the following statement “While no one could have predicted or prevented the extent of Hurricane Katrina’s damage…” I am amazed, truly amazed! I have appended my earlier email to you on this very subject. I like to think that the “no one could have predicted…” mindset is not a belief that is held Senate-wide. Predictions were everywhere, monies were channeled elsewhere (one of my favorites is the $200+ million bridge between islands in Alaska), but nowhere is there anyone stepping forward to assume responsibility.

I have read that the President is going to conduct an investigation. Might I suggest this is similar to the fox telling the farmer that the henhouse has been robbed of hens and eggs, and that he, himself, will look into it for the farmer. I recommend a full Senate investigation to determine what went wrong with the planning, what went wrong with the implementation of what turned out to be a faulty plan (FEMA officials were in Greece for a wedding for heaven’s sake!), and issue indictments against those who are found culpable.

.

Respectfully

Nope, all I could do was agree and fill him in on some of the stories that I've read on DU today. I think his head nearly exploded. I've known this guy for 12 years; talked to him after two departments he was with were closed, after he was forced to resign (and then was rehired for less $$) and he has never been ANYWHERE near this emotional or pissed!

18. Gratifying to hear
I love it when "closet" liberals start speaking up. The wingnuts get scared. There are more of us than they think. A few of my mild-mannered co-workers are getting angry. And vocal. Our evangelical freepers aren't quite as smug and swaggering as before. They're keeping quiet and trying to be less obnoxious. I think Bush's idiocy has them off balance.

10. OK, question...
I've heard WITH MY OWN EARS a blatant sexual innuendo in Aladdin, this isn't the case of a FOAF here. Y'know, when Aladdin's on the balcony with the tiger and he says, "Good tiger. Good Rajah." If you turn the volume all the way up, you hear him say, "Good teenagers take off their clothes!" What's the deal with that? There are several innuendo alleged to be in several Disney works, but let's just stick to this one.

13. Actually, I worked on that sequence
and I think I was in the recording session with Scott (the young man who provided Aladdin's voice) for that one as well. As I recall, he was whispering to Rajah "Good tiger..take off now, go"! So that one was a case of people hearing something that wasn't quite there. There's also a controversy over the supposed letters in some leaves in "The Lion King" that spell out "SEX"-but actually the letters were "SFX". At the time, the union was in negotiations with the studio over pay for the special effects artists. The artists argued that their work is taken for granted when it's done well (as it doesn't get noticed when it's close to perfect), so they put the acronym for their department in that sequence to make their point.

I suppose it's the fact that Disney is such an inviting target that tittilates our prurient interest, no pun intended.

16. He was probably always a "closet" liberal
he simply never spoke about politics at work (which is probably why he's been there for over 20 years). The current news obviously is for him (as for many of us) the final straw. He can no longer hold his tongue. I just hope that millions more out there are like him; no longer willing to remain silent in the face of so much BS.

20. I have two friends from home
one just spent the last 18 months in Iraq and the other is still in Philly. Both were on the wrong side of the fence, but I recently talked to them and they are both firmly against this administration now.

Jesse, my friend in Iraq said this about the War. "You have never seen a group of more apathetic people in your life; we don't care about them, they don't care about us, our officers don't care about us, and Bush certainly doesn't care about us." The quote isn't exact (I can't remember exactly how he put it) but the meaning is still the same. Bottom line, he hates it over there and even said the best thing we could do would be to simply leave. He still thinks the cause was noble, just carried out incorrectly. I don't even have the heart to tell him that it wasn't, and that he and his friends are being used and abused by this administration!

The moral of the story, the sheeple are waking my friends, and it's not going to be pretty when the public finally realizes they've been had for the last 5 years!

Me too!

In fact, I lost most of my clients or have refused work because of either my opinion of the Conservative culture or theirs.

I would never do work for Disney (but I am pretty small potatoes ~joke spelling by the way!)

Oh well, hopefully some dems will be calling me soon!

24. Nope
Former Animator turned Illustrator (I have a degree in illustration, so that worked out pretty well). I work for other large corporations and publishers too, but Disney has always been my primary client. Most of the people I've known in the corporation over the past 16 years are either liberal or apolitical, but this person has always been the consummate professional, so his outburst today took me completely by surprise.

23. I am in a very similar profession btw, and have a reputation for staying
politically neutral because professionally it could be suicide to be otherwise.

A few know my true political leanings.

The other day I was on the phone with my mom in Houston (a true non thinking, non political, never voted, hardly pays attention to the world outside her needs type of person) and she was parroting back what she had heard earlier.

Something abt "well Bush got there to NOLA and sure straightened things out."

I blew a gasket. It was ugly.

Hope a client doesn't say anything like that -- could be a problem. Although I am in a very blue area -- so the red types usu. know they need to keep their traps shut, but I can't promise to remain neutral any longer.

25. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's already too late.
No doubt we will win in the mid-terms, and probably in '08 as well, but the damage is done. They won. It would take such a huge, unified, effort to undo the damage that it is impossible with the majority of the public so completely brain-washed.

Welcome to the United Serfs of Amerika.

27. I know the feeling -- my mild-mannered landlord ...
... an economist and government bureaucrat, from an Amish family to boot ... spent the weekend locked in his upstairs office with the stereo cranked so high that I could feel the vibrations in the basement. He played blues, jazz, and zydeco music past midnight.

I hadn't suspected that he had so much rage in him -- or such a big music collection.

What's more, he says his whole office is outraged and horrified by the past week.

Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 06:45 PM by joefree1
I've got lots of friends at Disney and in the theme park biz. I'm an art director also but primarily work on theme park production. I'm in China at the momment and all of the expats here are blown away by what happened in New Orleans.

Unfortunately too many folk in our industry live in their own little fantasy world and hate talking about yucky things like war, proverty, polution and politics. I know some are starting to wake up but not enough.

And then there's the odd ultra conservative designer, artist, or techie. Usually some repressed type who has father/mother issues.

Check out my web site and see if you recognize me. Thanks for the posting. Glad to hear your AD is coming around.
