7. The Bill Gates Foundation has put up 1.5 Million
A lot will dump on them for not doing more, but they've also put more into Africa than almost every other COUNTRY on Earth, combined.

I think Microsoft has a lot of crap business practices, but I will never, ever say anything about Bill's philanthropy.

23. People have been skeptical of Oprah the past few days...
.... because of her own past behavior. As I pointed out to you yesterday (when threads were rolling off too fast for any real conversation), Nate Clay and other Chicagoans in the black community criticized her for not breaking away from her Hawaiian vacation to attend John J. Johnson's funeral. JJJ did a lot for her career and her absence was viewed as a snub.

Oprah has her faults and to call her on her grandstanding is not out of line.

This isn't a comment towards you in particular.

I agree that everyone is open to criticism, but not everyone is criticized. It's a suspicious coincidence that so many criticism are directed at people of the same ethnic background -- for reasons based on race.

Your "race card" meme isn't any different from the RW's "blame game" meme they are all quick excuses to sweep the ugliness of reality under the rug :puke: Now for the last time racism isnt a game, I'm not playing a game I view racism very seriously, you on the other hand don't. (eom)

Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 04:51 PM by Rabrrrrrr
when it clearly isn't. YOU are the one playing the game, a childhood playground taunting game.

There is NOTHING overtly, tangentially, somewhat, or even at all racist about criticising Oprah. Just as there is NOTHING racist about criticising Martha Stewart, unless one actually says something racist. But criticism and critique ARE NOT ipso facto race-related activities.

And I view racism as SUCh a serious topic, then when the canard "racist" is tossed around willy nilly in appropriate scenarios - such as you are doing with your "Oprah criticism = racism" platform - then you demean the value of the word, you lessen the impact of real racism, and you make the whole unacceptable reality of racism into a meaningless playground chant and turn it into something isignificant, and thus ignorable, and turn it into a non-issue.

Save the accusations of racism for the times when there actually is racism.

I take racism VERY seriously. Racism and homophobia are my two hot-button issues. That's why I *don't* turn it into a game, like you do; that's why I reserve the accusation of "racism" for the times that there actually IS racism.

Unless and until you can explain to my why criticising someone on their behavior is a de facto race issue, and why it is impossible to criticise someone of African-American descent without being racist, then I can only continue to assume that for you it's all fun and games, running around like the boy who cried wolf, until no one believed him any more, even when there really was a wolf.

Please, take racism seriously enough NOT to treat it like a playground taunt.

So tell me, exactly, which one or more of those statements/thoughts am I **LYING** about?

I AM accusing her of making a game; I truly meant that perhaps I was being too subtle; I actually sometimes accused of too much sarcasm, which sarcasm detracts from getting my point across; and that time, I actually DID spell it out for her.

So, Mr. I-can-see-into-people's-minds, where am I lying?

She pretends to be black, but the way she behaved at Hermes in Paris makes her whiter than Beverly Hills. Throwing a tantrum because they had the audacity to NOT let her in afterhours.

She is a spoiled phony, and she should burn in hell for covering the ass of WHITE rapist Ahnold.

For the record, it was Oprah who foisted Martha Stewart on the masses before she was well-known.

Anyone who acts like a REPUBLICAN (like on the shopping trip - $6000 handbags are sold in that store, and she complained VOCIFEROUSLY because they wouldn't let her in AFTER THEY CLOSED) is WHITE, and I damn well have the right to judge. It is MY BUSINESS when a public figure acts like a COMPLETE AND TOTAL JACKASS REPUBLICAN. It is my DUTY to call her on her phony-ass behavior. I am sick of the Cult of Oprah, like she is some goddess worthy of uncritical praise and admiration. Fuck her with an Ahnold campaign poster!

Speaking of Ahnold, she let the WHITE RAPIST off without a pass. FAWNED and GUSHED over him, because he is a CELEBRITY in SHOW BUSINESS.

She is the most vile narcissist in America. Even her advertisement for her "hurricane special" had this concluding extreme close-up shot of her tearful face - as if the hurricane is ALL ABOUT HER. :puke: :puke: :puke:

And her fucking MAGAZINE, don't get me started on that. :nuke:

REAL black women helped make America great: Harriet Tubman, Bessie Smith, Barbara Jordan, Shirley Chisholm, and Maxine Waters, to name but a few.

Oprah is a white blight on their names.

201. You really need to look into what Oprah does a bit more
Yeah, she has bought into her press a bit much the last few years, but do you have any idea how much she gives to the community every year. Millions, in both time, money, and using her name to get things done. College scholarships, literacy programs, programs in Africa... hundreds of things that are never publicized.

The Hermes thing? Who frigging cares! She gets press like that because she is a successful black woman, and that is the truth. She isn't white, doesn't act white, and doesn't try to be white. I don't begrudge her her $2,000 handbags -- it's her fucking money; she earned every cent of it. She comes from a very working class background, was sexually abused for many years, and made it in a business and at a time when women had trouble making it, let alone a black women. Jesus. Give her a BREAK.

Re: Arnold. She fucked up there, but the kindness was to Maria Shriver, not Arnold. Maria befriended her in Baltimore many years ago, and I think Oprah was showing her appreciation for this kindness. Yeah, a mistake, but Oprah didn't elect him governor.

She si NOT a REpublican! God, that's just nasty.

Her magazine? Not my cup of tea, but neither is Popular Mechanics, but a lot of people enjoy them, so it's no skin off of my nose.

And, Oprah is NOT a blight on their anmes... for every give away show she has a show celebrating minorities and women. And she has helped educate and raise up so many people,

For the record, I';m white.

The amount of Oprah bashing on DU is disturbing. Direct the vitriolic where it should be directed. And flame away -- I have a cold and am going to bed.

205. She acts like one
Which is as bad.

She is so fake... that is why we hate her. She does MORE damage by pretending to be compassionate and caring.

On her special yesterday, a person broke down in front of her and needed some SERIOUS comfort. Oprah barely touched her shoulder. She couldn't deign to mess up her clothes on TeeVee! :eyes:

Sorry, but when someone acts that phony, and throws a tantrum outside of a ritzy store ($6000, not $2000, and that is still obscene), they MIGHT AS WELL BE a repuke.

Her abuse and her background may have once been worthwhile of praise, but she squandered it with extreme narcissism. SO many better black female role models (I listed some, I could list more) to choose from, and I think she has worn out her 15 minutes and then some.

Oprah sucks poo.

Seriously.. I don't like Oprah for a couple reasons.. none of which are because she's black.

I don't like those white guys you listed either and all for the same reason.. they're all rich overpaid egotistical snobs.

My disdain for certain people runs on both sides of the color line.

Personally, I hope she blows the roof off of this mess. I'll be more than happy to change my view of her if she does what she has the ability to do.

73. Listen...
People are irritated with her because she courted Bush and helped Arnold get elected. This is the reason there's negativity toward her. One can surely understand why they've had it with her.

And I'm wondering today where the hell are all the Republican celebrities today? Remember Ron Silver during the conventions? Where the hell is he today telling us how wonderful Bush and the Republicans are?

I've had it with all of them - unless they rally people against how this whole ordeal has been handled. Oprah seems to be doing her part from what I'm reading in this thread. Her show will air here shortly. But don't blame people for how they feel about Oprah. She made her bed. This is her opportunity to do real good for the people of the Gulf Coast and for the nation.

85. Nope, sorry, don't want to hear it
I don't understand why people are so vitriolic toward Oprah. I really don't. She's an entertainer, not a journalist (though she did start her career as one) or a politician. Am I saying she's above criticism? No, certainly not, no one is...and there is stuff that she's done that I don't agree with. But she has done a hell of a lot of good in this world. A lot more than the armchair peanut gallery that always comes out of the woodwork to trash her will ever do.

Sell it somewhere else, kthnxbye.

130. Oh PLEASE she "courted" Bush.
I just don't understand that charge AT ALL. For god's sake, he kissed her on the cheek, AFTER the show, if I recall correctly (even if not, whatever). Was she supposed to punch him in the face? I have *seen* the picture, and it does NOT look like it was a mutual lovefest.

She didn't give him easy questions, etc. etc. etc.

Also, she led the season with Al Gore. So you saw commercial after commercial after commercial about Alby. More publicity. And she *asked* Gore for a hug. She gave Alby time, she gave Bush time.

She did a voting show, which doesn't lend itself to the current party in power...Bush asked her to go to Afghanistan after 9/11 and she said NO.

As for Arnold, that was a bad decision--*but* Maria Shriver is almost her best friend for pete's sake, and it *was* a newsworthy story if you get away from the fact that he kisses Bush's ass.

I don't know what people want from her, geez!

196. Like no one on this board has EVER made a mistake in life.
Oprah has given away MILLIONS and will continue to do so, to help the poor, those with HIV and Aids, children who are orphans. She already HAS done good for the nation and the world. I'm sure we don't know half of what she has done in the way of helping out those in need.

But heck, let's not take ANY of THAT into account because she 'courted?' * and 'helped Arnold get elected.' Yeah, Arnolds wife just happens to be one of her best friends in the world. So she probably wouldn't come out swinging against the guy out of respect for her friend. As for *, courted? LMAO.

Nah, let's not pay ANY attention at all to the good this woman has done for the world. It's SO much more fun to belittle her and make ourselves feel SO BIG. :puke:

Penn accuses Bush amid rescue chaos

He told the Liverpool Daily Post: "I couldn't describe how bad the authorities were. Just little things like taking photographs of us, as we are standing on the roof waving for help, for their own little snapshot albums.

"At one point, there were a load of girls on the roof of the hotel saying 'Can you help us?' and the policemen said 'Show us what you've got' and made signs for them to lift their T-shirts. When the girls refused, they said 'Fine' and motored off down the road in their boat

She is putting a human face on this, which is one of the things she does best.

If you go to http://www2.oprah.com/tows/program/tows_prog_whenwhere.jhtml

and enter in your state, etc., it'll give you a time.

For me, I knew that time (4pm) and I missed it. I went to the station's site and looked for the rerun....for me it's about 1 in the morning.

You sure you don't get a rerun late at night?

an incredible amount of grace. But sadly so much of the focus has been on the 1%.

He also was sickened by the bodies just left where they died. He covered one woman's body along the side of a road and said everyone deserved that respect.

I thought I had no more tears to cry.

117. My Analysis of this show.. DEVASTATING FOR BUSH!
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 04:48 PM by leftchick
1. She was not accompanied by any FEMA/FEDs only the Mayor and city of NO police chief. Who have had no sleep for days and are staying in NO throughout.

2. The Dead and Dying throughout her whole show. Where is the help once again?

3. All of the celebrities spending millions to do what the FEDs should have been doing.

4. The Doctor walking at the convention center and others site was devastating. It was heartbreaking and horrible.

That is just a quick synopsis but my gut feeling is bush is going to look real bad even to the stepford repuke wives who watch Oprah. Where Was Our Government???

123. I agree 100%
"This country owes these people an apology"

"We - the people - will not let them stand alone."

Ok -- so many of us might wish she would have ripped Bush a new one. I think she let the footage speak for itself. I think it was MORE powerful this way.

And -- "this Country" -- is the country that elected this Man (or - if we didn't elect him; if the election was indeed stolen; we failed to raise a significant-enough stink about it).

I think it was VERY VERY powerful - and perfect in its pitch.

Celebrities Rush to Aid Relief Effort

Celebrities donated money and time, in person and on TV, to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. On Monday, Oprah Winfrey and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., visited Houston, where singer Macy Gray spent Saturday in the Astrodome, handing out clothing and toiletries to some of the more than 18,500 evacuees from New Orleans who have found a home in the sports arena.

Writer John Grisham and his wife have donated $5 million to establish a relief fund to help Mississippians rebuild. Grisham said the Rebuild the Coast Fund Organization will aid Mississippi residents and businesses.

Alan Jackson will donate the proceeds from his concert Thursday in Columbus, Ohio, to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Green Day, REM, Pearl Jam, Moby, the Beastie Boys and The Roots, along with actors Tim Robbins and John Cusack, have joined MoveOn.org Civic Action to produce public-service announcements designed to find housing for hurricane victims. And Willie Nelson and Farm Aid launched the Family Farm Disaster Fund. Farm Aid has sent an initial $30,000 to partner organizations in the Southeast.

Following NBC's A Concert for Hurricane Relief, which won its time slot Friday with an average 7.4 million viewers, according to preliminary ratings, more TV relief efforts gathered momentum.

*The six broadcast networks will join forces Friday for Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast, to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The one-hour special will be simulcast on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, UPN and WB (8 p.m. ET/tape PT). The musical lineup was expected to be announced today.

*MTV Networks' benefit ReAct Now: Music & Relief (Sept. 10, 8 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, VH1 and CMT) will showcase the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Kanye West, Sheryl Crow, Paul McCartney and the Neville Brothers.

*The Grand Ole Opry and TV network Great American Country (GAC) will hold Country Reaches Out: An Opry Benefit for the American Red Cross, Sept. 27 (9 p.m. ET) featuring Alan Jackson, Alison Krauss, Craig Morgan and Billy Currington.

*On Sept. 22, the Gospel Music Channel and I (formerly PAX TV) will air Gospel Angels, a live concert from Atlanta and other locations featuring gospel and Christian-music stars. (7 p.m. ET on the Gospel Music Channel, 8 p.m. ET on I.)

Additionally, relief efforts along the Gulf Coast have led Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to postpone his appearance on CBS' Late Show with David Letterman, originally scheduled for tonight.

I am sorry for not yelling louder when I saw what a mess this administration has been. I promise to write my congress members right now and demand that they hold this administration up to the contempt they deserve. I promise to never let another disaster happen without doing what I can. I promise to teach this lesson to all who will hear, regardless of the inconvenience to myself, regardless of who likes or doesn't like it. I promise to use all the resources at my command to fight the abuses of my fellow man. I will leave my children with a better world and a world where abuses like this never happen again. And, when the revolution begins I will be on the side that fights for the rights of all of us, even if that means my life (and I do not think I am being dramatic).

161. I have been wondering what I could possibly do...
I am recently returned to the USA after four years living abroad... I am unemployed, looking for a job, staying with family, no car, very little cash, etc...

There are, as yet, no survivors in my area, though our NG base has been activated and may become a long-term shelter in the near future.

After watching this, and know that, not only during this time of crisis, but EVERY SINGLE DAY, there are people, good people, living in hell, I need to change my life and do something about it.

I have always been outspoken; I have protested and written letters and worked in campaigns.

But what can I do now? I want to live my life so that it matters; so that, when I die, I know I've done everything I could to make the world better, not worse. That's what I've always admired about MLK, Gandhi, etc. And that's what I took away from 'The Passion', too (I am an atheist - but after this Oprah program, I was even thinking of becoming a nun!). Some people are 'awake' and try in every moment to Do The Right Thing. I think most of us on this board are striving toward that. As opposed to striving for money, status, etc.

What were YOU moved to do?

174. Excellent coverage by Oprah.
I was extremely relieved when I realized she was going to show IT ALL.

The chimp will be toast after Oprah is finished with him.

179. so moving
I cried throughout the entire show. The guy who was being forced to leave his dog tore me up. Nate--I just love the guy--came through for him...just so heart-wrenching...

I'm still reeling from this and it's been two hours ago.

horrible, horrible, horrible that this atrosity has happened

180. You and me both
a friend called while I was watching it. They asked what was wrong and I said "I'm watching Oprah-it's about Katrina. Sorry, I can't talk right now". Then I started crying. They probably think I'm PMSing or something, but I think that few could watch that show without a lump in their throats.

209. Locking
Oprah's show is long since over... and this discussion's played itself out, and in some rather unpleasantly race-baiting directions.
